Brighton fans on why Lascelles does NOT deserve England call up over Dunk – Embarrassing

Following an injury to James Tarkowski, England chose to call-up Brighton’s Lewis Dunk to the England squad ahead of upcoming games against Croatia and Spain – meaning Gareth Southgate has chosen to snub Jamaal Lascelles once again.

Several Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to voice their frustration after seeing the skipper has been overlooked once again, with Southgate choosing handing a debut call-up to Brighton centre-back Lewis Dunk instead.

Don’t get me wrong, Dunk is a good player and he’s rightfully in contention, however I’m really struggling to see how he’s outperformed Lascelles – not that Brighton fans are agreeing with our side of the story.

Here’s what some have have had to say on social media when defending Dunk’s inclusion over Lascelles:

“Lascelles is above Dunk? Really? Because he looks 6 points below him.”

“Dunk was quality last season and has been once again this season. Lascelles hasn’t been as consistent in my eyes”

“Lascelles may be better than Dunk in some Newcastle fans eyes but he’s at a worse club in poorer form – that counts for everything”

“Newcastle are in the bottom three – doesn’t seem to me like Lascelles is doing a good job for the Geordies. Dunk all the way!”

“He might be their captain and has obviously improved under Benitez, but is he actually THAT good.”

“Lascelles is solid, but can he ping 60-yard diagonal passes like Lewis Dunk? I doubt it.”

“Dunk, Maguire etc wouldn’t lace his boots…But if CB’s that can’t move is what you’re after..”

“Have you seen Newcastle this season?!”

Some of these points are so irrelevant and inaccurate it’s untrue.

The last one sums it up. I’m not sure what our form as a team has to do with it. Brighton might be ahead of us in the table at present, however we’ve conceded just as many goals as them despite having the far tougher fixtures (playing five of the top 6 in our opening 8 games).

Fulham have conceded the most goals in the league so far this season but their goalkeeper has been selected, so form as a team mustn’t dictate what Southgate thinks of the individual in question.

A lot of this is subjective and we’re bound to back our own player, but some of these comments are quite fabricated just to support their argument.

For what it’s worth, I like Dunk, but discrediting Lascelles’ ability as a defender to better Dunk’s argument is so poor from the Brighton fans here.
