Ex-Premier League Chairman makes outrageous Rafa Benitez claim – There’s no way this is true

Speaking to talkSPORT (say no more), former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has launched a bizarre attack on Rafa Benitez – claiming the Spaniard only cares about himself and is only using Newcastle as a ‘stepping stone’.

It’s hard to know where to even start with this one.

Before I get into it, here’s what he’s had to say about Rafa this week:

“It is difficult to defend the indefensible. I have mixed emotions.

“I know that he walks on water, I know that they see him as the second coming. I don’t see him that way.

“Rafa Benitez is about Rafa Benitez and if there is an opportunity for him to advance himself, something that he thinks is better than Newcastle, then he’ll be out the door and leave behind these adoring fans.

“I believe Newcastle are a stepping stone for him.”

What Jordan seems to be forgetting is the fact Benitez stayed when we were relegated to the Championship. He didn’t have to and he risked his status as a top class manager in doing so, but he did. That alone practically disproves a lot of what Jordan’s said here.

In the months prior to our drop down into the second tier, Benitez has been managing Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, yet he stayed to try and get us back into the top flight, tackling the likes of Burton Albion in front of 8,000 crowds as a result.

For two and a half years now, his time at Newcastle has went anything but to plan. He’s had reason to turn his back on the club on several occasions, yet he never has done.

Whether you see him as ‘the second coming’ or not, It’s quite clear stayed for his ‘adoring fans’ – and the fact he turned down the chance to manage Spain at this summer’s World Cup proves he sees us as anything but a stepping stone.
