According to The Mirror, Rafa Benitez is now ‘confident’ that Mike Ashley will ‘loosen his purse strings’ and had him a ‘substantial’ transfer kitty in the January window – with his presence at games allowing him to see just how much we’re struggling.
No one knows exactly why Ashley has re-emerged and started attending games at NUFC, but it will have been hard for even him to ignore just how poor we’ve been.
He’s attended our last five games and he can’t have been impressed – with us losing three, drawing two (both 0-0’s) and failing to score in four of these five matches.
Here’s what The Mirror has said about the situation, revealing that Benitez is now confident that he’ll get money to spend in January as a result of Ashley’s reappearance:
‘Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez believes he will be given cash to spend in the New Year to boost his relegation-threatened side.
‘The Toon boss is confident that owner Mike Ashley will loosen the purse strings and hand over a substantial transfer kitty – having seen first hand the problems Benitez is facing.
‘Ashley has attended Newcastle’s last five games; they haven’t won any and have failed to score in their last four.
‘The goalless draw on Saturday at Southampton ensured the club equalled their worst league start in 120 years, with the Magpies now winless in their first 10 games.’
It’s been our worst start to a league season since the 1890’s and many quite rightfully believe that money must now be spent in January if we’re going to beat the drop.
There’s been news today that our top striker target is Frankfurt’s Sebastien Haller, with Rafa also expecting to sign a number 10 and left-back as well.
Time will tell if he’s backed, but surely Ashley isn’t stupid enough to risk it this time?
