Premier League duo considering January moves to sign NUFC star – Report

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle will have to fend off interest in Jamaal Lascelles this winter, with both Spurs and Chelsea considering a January move.

After showing interest over the summer, Mark Douglas has confirmed that both London clubs have continued to track the centre-back – claiming he has been a ‘long-time target’ for Chelsea in particular.

Club captain Lascelles is our leader and prized asset in what otherwise is a pretty average squad, one that needs improving in winter – not weakened.

The former Forest man has always spoken of his happiness on Tyneside, thriving under the armband and the guidance of manager Rafa Benitez. However, our poor start to the year may change his thoughts and the lure of Champions League football vs a relegation fight is always going to be tempting.

Newcastle will value the centre back north of £40m.  A move to the top six may help him realise that ambition but United are historically tough sellers and it will be almost impossible to prize him away from Newcastle half way through the season. His sale would also likely be the breaking point for both the manager and fans alike, as we all know the proceeds would not all be invested into incoming transfers.

It’s a story that continues to have legs but let’s hope it is just speculation, until next summer at least.
