These SIX strikers have been linked with moves to NUFC this week – Could one sign in January?

With us now just two months away from the winter transfer window opening in January, the rumour mill is starting up and Newcastle have already been linked with SIX strikers over the last week.

Frankfurt duo Sebastien Haller and Luka Jovic have been linked, along with Watford’s Troy Deeney, Liverpool’s Divock Origi, Bologna’s Mattia Destro and Club Brugge’s Wesley Moreas.

Here’s a brief look at the six mentioned:

Sebastian Haller – According to the Northern Echo the 24 year old French is Rafa’s top target. A big powerful striker at 6ft 3 and is scoring pretty regularly in a decent Frankfurt side. His style of play would appear to suit the premier league, but he is likely to have interest from around Europe and will come at a cost.

Troy Deeney – A relatively proven Premier League goalscorer and a leader. His experience would be invaluable in a relegation battle and has praised Newcastle’s fan base on more than one occasion, he would be a fan favourite. As most premier league proven strikers would, he is likely to cost a lot, and at 30 , it would be unlikely Ashley would consider splashing the cash on him.
Mattia Destro – The Italian has been told he is ‘free to leave’ Bologna in January. He is a player Rafa knows and has been linked with in the past. According to the Italian press that Rafa is set to pull some strings to get a deal done. He is not a prolific striker and unproven in the Premier League, so it would be a risk to expect him to save us from our goalscoring issues.
Divock Origi – Seems to have been around for years but still young at 23. Rafa has enquired about his availability according to the Chronicle. It is thought that Liverpool would ask in the region of £20m for the striker but in the current market that doesn’t seem too pricey.  If Ashley would be prepared to pay that much is another matter, but as a young striker with plenty potential and sell on value, he could be an appealing option for both parties. Again , he is not a proven prolific goalscorer, but could be a player to get the fans off their seats.
Luka Jovic – The Chronicle claim that we have sent scouts to watch the 20 year old who has already scored 9 goals for Frankfurt this season. He is very inexperienced, is not a proven goalscorer as of yet and would be a real gamble. Maybe not as costly as the others mentioned which may be of interest Ashley more than Rafa!
Wesley Moraes – It was reported last month that NUFC had club scouts at Club Brugge’s Champions League clash with Monaco, and Belgian press are now claiming that we went to watch Brugge’s Brazilian striker Wesley Moraes. He’s in good form this season, scoring 9 goals so far and looks a powerful young striker with potential, but just because he’s scoring in the Belgian league doesn’t mean he’d do it in England.

Can you see us signing any of these in January?

Knowing the way rumours work, it’ll be someone completely different who ends up signing..
