After signing a new six-year-deal with the club yesterday, Jamaal Lascelles has insisted that he would NOT leave Newcastle even if we were relegated this season – also confirming that there has been no release clause added to his contract.
This is reassuring to hear from the skipper, with him having some making up to do as far as a few NUFC fans are concerned after appearing to side with “nice guy” Mike Ashley yesterday.
Whilst he was generally making a plea to fans, urging us to get behind the team tomorrow, he praised Ashley and then asked supporters to stop the ‘negativity’ – touching on a sensitive subject a little too ignorantly for some people’s liking.
Back to his future, here’s what he’s said when asked if there was any clauses in his new deal:
“There is actually no clause where I can escape – I didn’t want there to be.
“It is not even a conversation that took place.
“I am happy here and over the moon to sign for six years.
“I was buzzing when I got offered a new deal.
“I am happy to see out a lot of my career here.”
The skipper then said the following when asked if he’d leave if the worst were to happen and the club were relegated back down into the Championship next summer:
“Would I leave? No. I’d be here.
“I’m part of this team.
“If we were to get relegated, I would have been part of that team and I would want to be part of the team that gets promoted.”
A reassuring response, however Lascelles then insisted that the club will NOT be going down – giving a defiant response to the doubters expecting us to suffer our third relegation in 10 years:
“We’re not going to get relegated at all, it’s not happening.”
Strong words from Lascelles and very good to hear if true – although I suspect there’d be so many tempting offers arrive for him if we were relegated next summer.
Has he made up for yesterday’s mistake, or is he still in your bad books?
