The Chronicle’s Chris Waugh has shared a brilliant story after attending last night’s NUFC foundation Dinner, revealing that Rafa Benitez went out of his way to invite all of the award winners to attend a training session and meet their heroes.
As Waugh highlights, this was ‘unprompted’ and ‘off the cuff’, reminding us all that he is not only a terrific manager and top tactician, but also a brilliant bloke who goes above and beyond to give something back to the fans.
This year’s dinner celebrated the 10-year anniversary of this local charity, with the Newcastle United foundation using the ‘passion of football’ to make a difference to young people and their families in our region.
Here’s what Chris Waugh had to say about Rafa’s spontaneous act of kindness last night:
Rafa – after presenting a couple of awards – has just, unprompted & off the cuff, invited all of the @NU_Foundation winners this evening to a #nufc training session. He really does go above & beyond

A brilliant gesture from Benitez, with him proving once again that he really does ‘get it’, going that extra mile to give back to the fans and those who are less fortunate.
The dinner was also attended by several members of the NUFC playing squad.
Here’s what Federico Fernandez posted on social media after last night’s event:
Nice to be part of the 10 years dinner of the @NU_Foundation last night. Great to meet all the people involved in this amazing project. All the best for the future. @NUFC pic.twitter.com/coBS3ILCvu
