NUFC flop makes shocking admission about his spell at St James’ Park – but I have no sympathy

Former NUFC flop Florian Thauvin has made a shocking admission about his time on Tyneside, claiming ‘no one’ talked to him and ‘no one was there to help’ during his time on Tyneside.

I can see why he looks back on his time at Newcastle as a complete and utter disaster, but it always seems to be our fault that it never worked – yet we possibly did him a favour given how well things have worked out for him since returning to Marseille.

Before we open that can of worms, here’s what he’s had to say today when reflecting on his spell at St James’ – with him saying how he believed his ‘career was f*****d’ at one stage: :

“I made some bad decisions. I can tell you, today, I have a good entourage, and it’s a lot easier for me to feel good.

“It’s all a lot simpler. I made the wrong choices in the past, no one was there to help me at that time, and that’s why I got it wrong.

“Maybe if I’d stayed longer, I could have won a spot in the team, but I wasn’t thinking about that. I told myself I wasn’t playing and I wanted to leave – to go back to Marseille.

“Over there, I thought my career was f*****. I came home in the evening and told my girlfriend that this was it – it was over.

“I wasn’t playing at Newcastle. I ended up at this club lost, no one talked to me. My phone never rang. I had my family and my girlfriend.

“That’s when I decided to grab the bull by the horns and said ‘I’m going back to Marseille and I’ll make a name for myself’. And that’s what happened.”

We may have not given him a run in the side, but we did also pay £13m to sign him – yet, based on all the interviews I hear him give, he was never interested in being here in the first place.

Yes things went wrong for him, but there’s often two sides to the story. Did he work hard enough? Was he performing in training? Did he actually make an effort to be a success in England?

When you look at some of the NUFC players over the past few years who’ve started off awfully and turned it around, you can’t help but feel Thauvin just wasn’t up for the fight.

  1. In fairness if you had McClaren as manager and had basically been forced out of your last club for money, it’s perhaps understandable if you aren’t in the best frame of mind. This is all especially true when you’re in your early twenties at the time. He may not have helped himself with his behaviour, but if we’d had a competent manager at the time he could have perhaps put his arm round him. A player with great potential but he came to us at the wrong time.

  2. Your comments criticising a person you know nothing about is pathetic. Thauvin has made a statement about his life as a footballer, that’s it. Why do you feel like you have to judge someone’s character when you have no information to base it on??? He’s done well for himself since NUFC.

Ok, but do you not see the other side of the story?

We paid £13m for him and it was reported soon after he arrived that McClaren was not impressed by his effort levels in training and attitude.

Yes he made the wrong move, but he also had a job to do..
