Newcastle 2-1 Bournemouth: Sensational Salomon Rondon secures back to back wins at SJP

A superb display at St James’ Park and a performance from Salomon Rondon worthy of the NUFC number 9 shirt, with the big Venezuelan absolutely outstanding as he fired us to a well deserved 2-1 win against an in-form Bournemouth side.

We showed a brilliant mix of fight, grit and determination to beat Watford last weekend, and we showed all of that and more today – with some real moments of quality making this and even more impressive and convincing win.

It was a terrific team performance, but Rondon really was the star man. Even if he hadn’t scored twice I would’ve been coming out of the ground saying just how good he was. Two goals (one bullet header!), some outstanding hold up play, brilliant in the air and never stopped running. I always said he would suit this system better than Aleksandar Mitrovic, and today’s performances proves that. It was one of the best all round performances I’ve seen in a couple of years from a NUFC striker at St James’ Park.

With Lascelles and Shelvey out, many may have feared for us when reading the team sheets, but Schar and Ki came in and did brilliantly once again – and they weren’t the only ones who were brilliant today.

Fernandez was monstrous, Dummett didn’t put a foot wrong, Kenedy was a brilliant outlet and instrumental in Rondon’s second, Ritchie’s deliveries were much improved, Yedlin was better at both ends of the pitch and Perez put in his best performance of the season after several struggling displays.

We were all quite fearful coming into a home double-header against two sides flying in Watford and Bournemouth, but we’ve beaten both, secured rare back to back wins at St James’ Park and are now up to 14th!

Today’s results elsewhere went pretty well too. Cardiff may have won late (although the subsequent defeat for Brighton means we’re just 3 points behind them now), but both Huddersfield and Southampton lost leads at home to take just a point, with Burnley only drawing too.

The dreaded international break is now upon us, but we’ll go into the Burnley game full of confidence two weeks on Monday.

Here’s our next six fixtures between now and Christmas – with us facing a trip to Turf Moor two weeks on Monday:

  • Burnley (A)
  • West Ham (H)
  • Everton (A)
  • Wolves (H)
  • Huddersfield (A)
  • Fulham (H)

One final thought – a huge hats off to ‘Wor Flags’ for this incredible display in the Gallowgate end during today’s minutes silence:

Eric, nobody will buy NUFC, it’s too expensive and involves negotiating with a hardballing moron.

Kim – he’s the kind of person who would finally agree on a price, then say ‘I’ll take £300m – but I want it all in pound coins’. The man is an absolute d1ck

  2. So. I will be watching the Guard of Honour for Rooney. It wasn’t his fault that he was picked for England for 5 years after his sell-by date and that Mr. Roy let him pick the team and play where he wanted as he went on a mini-tour of Paris because Ray Lewington hadn’t been before. Maybe his media Pals will have a whip-round and give him 5 million as an extra going away present (although technically he retired 2 years ago after saying he would retire AFTER the world cup and doing so AFTER he was dropped). Now he’s back and the world will be a better place.

  3. I never felt that Wayne was a bad player he just ran out of steam. He is like a BMW with 200,000 miles on the clock. Past his prime, but his media Pals didn’t see it that way and I am sure they are saying he could still play for England in competitive games. He has found his level in MLS.

I don’t even know why he is doing this. One last bl@w job from the England hierarchy and a knighthood when he makes his triumphant return from the USA. Give him Scudamore’s job.

  5. Look. I am not trying to be disrespectful to the armed forces but they are all on the Wembley pitch now. Why not just have a full year of poppies and remembrance tributes . This must be about a month of it now.

Again, I am not being disrespectful, it has just gone on for so long now.

  6. If anybody is watching. You can see that MLS is bad and being given the runaround by a bunch of English kids. That’s why Rooney is doing OK here. He has found his level. But why not bring him on later for his tribute – to play against the standard he now plays for and against.

  7. Eric – there’s been a load of stink over here about Rooney getting a cap for tonight and how that’s wrong – blah blah blah.
Pundits saying he retired so why should he. I think he was right to retire, because the media over here would be on Southgates case asking why he’s leaving Englands record scorer out and putting pressure on for him to be selected. Him retiring makes it easier for Southgate and I actually think Rooney done an admirable think.
I agree with your BMW analogy. He was playing regular football at the highest level from around 17/18 yr old – so it was bound to happen. I don’t agree with the MLS being his level though – yes if he’s to be the stand out player, but he’s certainly not passed being a PL player – let’s face it, he’d be the key player in our team if he were to join in January (I don’t think he will at all, just hypothetically speaking).

As for the military being on the pitch – in fairness it was Sunday just gone, and 100yrs since WW1. If they hadn’t, I’m pretty sure they would have got criticised for it. But there was no minutes silence or wreathes laid or anything like that – so they probably got it about right I think.

Agree mate. I got no problem with it tbh and as you say it’s 100 years since that awful war , it should be marked.

  9. I have family who have been in the military and am not questioning whether there should be memorials, just that I thought it had ended and you don’t want to end up like the USA where sentimentalism takes over from memorializing those who died for a cause.

If you go to a baseball game here they have someone sing Star Spangled Banner then just for good measure someone else will sing God Bless America. There is a line that should be drawn between memorials and sentimentalism. I think with the uproar about poppies and so many ceremonies that that line has been crossed.

I am fine if you disagree with me though.

  10. I am Ok with National Anthems being played before National games and military memorials, although I think the Germans might want to rethink “Deuschland, Deutschland Uber Alles”. And the Bolivian’s definitely should change the second verse of their song – “Oh Great Dictator we love you so much, life would be so empty without you, please spread your seed amongst all our virgin children”.

      (Quote)

  11. The Germans did rethink their National Anthem BTW. They too out the first stanza referring to owning parts of France, Poland and Austria. But left in Uber Alles. They also considered Beethoven’s Ode to Joy as their anthem. Would have been a better choice.

I have looked into this nationalism a bit and quite often it is seen in the anthems and military parades.

Paraguay’s to this day is “Alfredo Stroessner, Aldredo my friend. At least you are not Hitler. We thank you for that”. It rhymes in Spanish.

  12. Listening to the cricket:

What do you think of today’s play goffy.

Darren, for it is he: when you walk daan the road for 15 yards you don’t think it would be 14 and a half.

Athers: yes he’s right but he is also wrong at the same time.

And how about you Bumble: I remember this one time I was playin’ in Wetherby, that’s North Yorks ya know. Not quite the place for a Lancs lad. But anyway, I had a nice cup-o-tea with Geoffrey Boycott’s missus. Lovely lass. And last night I took a trundle up to the top of the ‘ill ‘ere and had another cup of tea.

Oh, these Sri Lankan people are just so nice. Give you a cup of tea in a heartbeat. Sri Lankan tea you know. There’s this place on the hill out of town we took a tuk tuk to the other day.

do you want to say something Goffy?

Yes – took a Tuk Tuk too. That reminds me when I went to Timbuktu and took two wickets in Geoffrey Boycott’s last game for Yorkshire.

Eric – I’m not disagreeing with you mate. I’m just saying it’s an England game 4 days after Remembrance Sunday. If the English FA did nothing they’d have got slaughtered by the media. I don’t expect there to be anything on Sunday when we play Croatia at Wembley (though there is usually service men and women at the games, not on the pitch though). I think they got the balance right last night.

And then this one time I was in Wetherby like. Not the one in Yorkshire the one in Australia. This lass comes up to me and says can you get me Shane Warne’s autograph? What a cheek!

  15. Sharpy: that Rooney b@llocks was just b@llocks. His agent asked them to do it. Rooney also said that if it had meant that he would have passed Peter Shilton’s record number of caps he wouldn’t have played. What sort of nonsense is that. It either means something or it doesn’t

      (Quote)

  16. Really. Rooney’s agent went to the FA and said they needed to honour Wayne a bit more since he wasn’t given the best sending off when he retired (well, semi-retired since he came back). The guard of honour was a joke. And now pundits are saying he did so well and still has it. With his flicks and dinks. Where was that in the Iceland game? That was the quarter final of a tournament and not a meaningless friendly against a bunch of Yank college kids.

      (Quote)

  17. The long goodbye is a bit of a joke though isn’t it?

Should Mr. Roy also be congratulated for his job in Brasil and should Joe Hart and Ben Foster get a guard of honour for being **** at that tournament as well? They got 1 point FFS and finished bottom of the group FFS. But Wayne and Mr. Roy kept their jobs.

    And then…

2016 Euros. Mr. Roy on his sightseeing trip left Wayne to run the squad – from midfield FFS. He did a great job.

Definitely deserves a lap of honour for basically doing Fck all for 10 years except score against Malta, Moldova and San Moreno. A modern day Scottish forward could score against them.

The tears though Wayne. Think about the children.

      (Quote)

  18. The English gutterpress usually build someone up to tear them down. Strangely, they haven’t done this with Wazza. They wanted so desperately to have their own Messi that they have built castles in the sky for Wayne to live in. Now they have to pretend he is worthy of their lofty perch with guards of honour and a parade for his children.

He was a very special player. A man child who looked like he could equal Messi or Ronaldo. But he didn’t. He was very good, but not quite great. For some reason the press and even his peers swallow the myth his PR machine puts out and cannot ever say a word against Saint Wayne.

Yesterday was an opera. An event made up to extract every last bit of emotion (and pound ) from the crowd wishing that Wayne was what the press had told them he was, that they had hoped that he was.

      (Quote)

  19. Back to you Bumble. What do you think of today’s play?

I think Wayne played a blinder and them nippers o’ his could end up playin’ for England at Football or Cricket. Maybe even dual sports with a degree in curling. Anyway, we took this sea plane down to Katmandu and it had this heavy lass in the back. We had to move her up front to avoid turbulence. Made a grand cup o tea though. Sri Lankan I think it was.

      (Quote)

  20. And Athers?

I remember that game and don’t remember the 2 for 2. It was more like “if you don’t take these last two wickets you are on the first plane out of here and I don’t care how much tea is on it”.

      (Quote)

  21. Then I remember the time I played at Wetherby. Marvelous beaches. Or was that Scarborough? Anyway, when Botham hit a six it went straight into the sea and we all laughed because we had lost the ball and went and had fish and chips and a pie and a pint. Those were the days. And Geoffrey Boycott’s wife served us supper of kippers and fried rice.

      (Quote)

  22. And you Goffy?

Aye. I took six for six that one time in Sri Lanka. You had to pitch the ball up a bit on those pitches but it was worth it.

Do you know that if I wasn’t doing cricket commentary now I would be driving an Uber in Heckmondwike?

      (Quote)

  23. And you Athers?

Well, Wetherby is inland near Leeds and Botham could not possibly hit a 6 into the sea from there. Although it does have a river so the ball could have got wet and floated down to the sea. So, I will give it to Bumble and say Botham did hit a 6 into the sea even though it was 60 miles away and we all had fish and chips. Haddock, if I remember correctly?

      (Quote)

  24. Pollack, I think Athers. We overfished the cod and the haddock and pollack is the only sustainable fish left. I think we import it from Sri Lanka along with the tea.

    And Bumble?

Yes, Botham could definitely hit a six 60 miles. River assisted, of course.

Burnt the fire of thine eyes

It is probably the most beautiful big city in the US. I was probably overprotective and paranoid after what happened to me Mam. But it did feel like every few yards someone would ask for money or a cigarette (I smoked back then).

Did all of the tourist stuff. The tram. The Wharf. Some fancy seafood restaurant with a bar on either side. Cheesecake factory with that city view. Took a taxi back from up on a hill and did that Streets of San Francisco up and down and up and down ride. That windy road that used to be on post cards. Drove over the most beautiful bridge in the world. And quite a lot more.

I suppose it didn’t suck that much 🙂

    1. What the h3ll is Wayne on about saying some of his generation are jealous about the current players?

    2. Good game. I have no idea what it means but the players seemed happy.

    3. We qualified for the semi-finals of the Nations League. Whatever that means?

    4. Harry Kane is very good.

    5. Now there’s only 8 days to our next game. But will Rafa play players who have recovered (Shelvey, MUto, Lascelles) or stick with a winning team?

      (Quote)

  44. What exactly is Wazza on about saying his generation are jealous of this new team? They had been his most fervent supporters in the press for the 5 years when he should have been put out to stud. It will be interesting to see if their views change. Keown, especially.

The Waz dictated what he did at Euro 2016 and told Mr. Roy where he wanted to play so I am a bit confused by what he is saying now.

You will probably end up at Venice Beach at some point. It is a freak show. The sort of place where you are glad you went just to see it but wouldn’t go back. Sort of a more insane Blackpool but the weather is so nice that all of the freaks stay.

  47. Sorry if I am dominating the blog but nobody else seems to want to say much.

So 5 things I learnt from the Magpie Group interview:

    1. Shirebrook. They are idiots. They set up a protest at one of Ashley’s facilities then cancel it and don’t tell everybody it is cancelled. They were supposedly going to “peacefully” disrupt business. Do you think they wouldn’t be arrested if they tried to prevent people going to work or blocked vans?

    2. The Wolves boycott. They said a couple of weeks ago that they expected 25,000 NUFC fans not to attend, now they say they “haven’t applied a target”.

    3. West Ham. What is this about? A “walk in” at 11 minutes? Who do they think they are going to prove anything to? Do you think Sky will even mention it? The turnstiles might even be closed or at the very least there will be a bottleneck so you miss the game that you already paid for.

      (Quote)

  48. 4. Rafa is against it.

    5. Their goal is to force Ashley to sell. After 11 years haven’t we seen that he does whatever he wants and nothing they do will change his mind. If anything they will make him more obstinate.

      (Quote)

  49. Do these people really think they are going to influence Fat Mike? He stayed away for18 months and then turns up for the last 7 games when we had the worst start since 1898 was it? They jeer him and he doesn’t care. He dances to his own tune. If a few thousand stay away what does that matter. The money is in the TV deal and advertising for Sports Direct.

When have we ever had a good owner anyway. KcKeag? Westwood? the same people were b!tching about them and nothing happened. Don’t say John Hall. He milked the club for all it was worth after the Keegan miracle and scarpered as soon as he saw what Shepperd had done to the books.

The good old days were never the good old days at Newcastle United. We have always been owned by rich old men in it for themselves and had one brief period of success that these idiots at Magpie Group use as their baseline for what NUFC should be. It was never like that. That was the outlier. This is the norm for NUFC.

I have seen the stats that we were only relegated twice under all previous owners. But we almost went down to the old third division under previous owners as well and were getting home crowds of 15,000.

      (Quote)

  50. georgio:
Stuart – LA is the only city I know that’s hard to find when you’re actually in it.

georgio: do you know they have 2 soccer (football) teams in LA now? They have a derby that they call “El Traffico” which I thought was quite clever. Stuart will soon find out what they mean 🙂

      (Quote)

  51. I checked the comments on The Chronicle Magpies Group article after it has been up for a day. There are 13 of them. I don’t think that reflects on a level of apathy for wanting Ashley out, more so that we are powerless to force it. He does what he wants, when he wants with NUFC and 50 people meeting in an old working man’s club will not change it.

All you have to do is look at who owns the clubs now. Who are we going to get to replace Ashley?

Blood money from Russia or Saudi Arabia? Is that what we want? It would be nice to see David Silva every week but at what price? Swapping a tat touting landlord for a money launderer.

      (Quote)

  52. Looks like I am on a solo rant here which obviously means everybody agrees with what I am saying 🙂 I had to look up Shirebrook to see where it was. It is in Derbyshire. So the Magpie Group really expected hundreds or thousands of fans to give up their weekend and pay for a coach trip down there to protest against Sports Direct and probably get arrested if they blockaded the place?

I think they might have got Shirebrook and Shiremoor confused.

      (Quote)

  53. After the massive fail they just had with their first protest what do they actually think they can achieve? Protesting on matchday is self-defeating in my opinion. Protest before the game and you project a bad vibe. Protest after, and about 50 people stay/turn up. I have seen the photos. There were literally about 50 there.

The West Ham protest will be an embarrassment. It is ill-conceived and even less well thought out. Even people who agree with them will be standing around wondering what to do – is it 11 minutes yet, what do we do now, can we still get in the ground !!!!

And Rafa will come out for unity before the game, whatever the result at Burnley.

And what are Gallogate flags going to do? They take their flags in before the game and mostly wave them BEFORE the game. Are they going to take them in on 11 minutes? They are part of the Magpie Group remember.

      (Quote)

  54. And so to the Wolves boycott AGAIN. What do they hope to achieve? I will repeat, a couple of weeks ago they said they were expecting 25,000 TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND fans to join in and boycott the game. Now they don’t know a number and say trust us, we’ll tell you later.

This is going to be another disaster for the Magpie Group but they will try to spin it like they just didn’t get their message across. Maybe they should hire Keith Bishop.

      (Quote)

  55. It is actually pretty simple really. With any sort of grand cause you need a common enemy. But there isn’t one because Rafa and Ashley are in the same camp.

Where does Rafa stand on this? They portray their love for Rafa who asks for unity and then want protests. It is all very confusing to anybody who wants to get behind their “cause”.

ASHLEY OUT. But who in? They have this nebulous idea that some knight on a silver charger will ride in and save the club from the evil Ashley. You know, like when they thought Ashley was saving us from Sheppard 🙂

      (Quote)

  56. I said weeks and months ago that these protests were stupid and self-defeating and would be disasters but I need to repeat myself in case anybody accuses me of 20-20 hindsight when they fail on a massive scale because they are being organized by idiots who do not have a clear objective. Ashley out is not an objective if you don’t have a future plan! What they call democracy, a utopia of the fans saying what the club does is not an objective if you want to replace one dictator (Ashley) with another (anybody else ((unspecified)) with a lot of money).

It is all pie in the sky rubbish, not dealing with realities of today’s football ownership.
