Ex NUFC star makes bizarre Steve McClaren admission – I don’t think many expected this..

Former midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has admitted just how ‘devastated’ he was when Steve McClaren was sacked at Newcastle United back in 2016.

This comes as quite a surprise considering how bad we were under McClaren – especially when you consider how he struggled to get the players on side at various points in his short reign.

I doubt any other player would react the same about the former England manager, but, based on Wijnaldum’s comments, he was one of few who wanted to see him stay at St James’ Park:

”I was devastated that Steve Mclaren left.

“He brought me to Newcastle and he was great to work with and deserved way more from us as players”

He was one of McClaren’s big signings in the summer of 2015 and scored 11 times in his one and only season with us, being one of the brighter sparks in a miserable relegation season. However to hear that the player was DEVASTATED is very hard to believe.

It would’ve been interesting to see how Wijnaldum would have fared under Rafa’s leadership, especially when he seems to now be thriving under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Thriving? He’s useless? The Liverpool fans I know have no idea why he’s in the team or what he does…

You say that, but he’s in their team most weeks, fighting for the title and getting into CL finals.

He’s come on a lot if you ask me and I seem to think Lpool fans are really warming to him now.
