NUFC send scouts to watch Spanish international ahead of unlikely January move – Report

According Spanish Radio station Cadena SER, Newcastle are interested in Real Sociedad defender Diego Llorente – with ‘Scouts In Attendance’ also confirming that we had scouts present to watch him during Spain’s win over Bosnia on Sunday.

Llorente played the full 90 minutes that night, with Spain winning 1-0 in what was only his second cap for the full national side.

Llorente is highly regarded in Spain, a market Rafa will certainly know well and have good contacts in – although the signing of another centre-back is surely the last of our worries right now.

It seems an odd link to me, considering our strength and depth in centre half; it will surely be the last area we will be looking at in January. Striker, winger, full back or number 10 are all far more important to us at the moment and conspiracy theorists may point out that Llorente could be an option if Ashley decided to cash in on Lascelles this winter.

This is the only angle that would make sense as Llorente is likely to only be sold for his £30m Euro release clause and with Liverpool and Spurs also linked, a move seems very unlikely conferring the financial shackles that Ashley puts on NUFC. It is far more likely that we were scouting a cheaper option in the same game!
