Benitez ‘keen’ to sign ex-Sunderland star – & has been scouting him in ‘recent weeks’ – Report

According to some bizarre reports from Italy, Rafa Benitez has been scouting ex-Sunderland star Fabio Borini – with the story claiming that NUFC scouts have been watching the AC Milan forward ahead of the January transfer window.

Newcastle are certainly in the market for attacking options, but you can’t help but feel we need to bringing better than Borini.  He can play on the wing too, however the Italian has had a poor spell in Milan and is hardly prolific, scoring just two goals last year!

Here’s a snippet that we’ve google-translated from Tutto Mercato’s latest piece:

“Fabio Borini is considered transferable by the Milan club.

“The former Sunderland striker could end up in England for a new chapter of his career. He is liked by the Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez, who has carried out checks in recent weeks without making an offer.

“If they were to get offers, Milan is not excluding a departure.”

He would join former Sunderland players Ki, Manquillo, Colback and Yedlin on Newcastle’s books and would personify the budget options under the Ashley era.

The likes of Murphy, Atsu and Joselu have already proven you need to spend decent money to get quality through the door in the current market  -and with our precarious league position, we can’t be taking gambles on options like Borini.

Let’s hope this is purely paper talk, I would be surprised if he is on Rafa’s radar.

  1. When talking about tennis players years ago someone once said that the problem with the British tennis system was that we were spending all of our time trying to find 1 youngster who WILL win Wimbledon when we should be looking for a hundred who MIGHT.

On a similar vein rather than making statements like we should be bringing better than Borini shouldn’t we just be looking at better than Joselu and Perez?
