Considering their summer signing Richarlison cost just less than our entire starting 11, it’s fair to say Everton fans would’ve been expecting to get one over us last night – with many on Merseyside clearly left very frustrated by the 1-1 that followed.
They dominated possession and were the one side enjoying periods of pressure, however they were unable to break us down – with our impressive levels of organisation and fight ensuring we came away with a hard earned point.
We sat deep, had just 24% possession and committed 18 fouls, tactic that would have frustrated the home crowd no doubt, but we were never about to go toe-to-toe with a side £250m full of talent.
Nevertheless, Everton fans weren’t impressed. Here’s what some said on Twitter after last night’s game – with it ironic to see some mention ‘time wasting’ and poor style of football given this is exactly what Allaryce did for them at St James’ Park last season:
Just when you think a team couldn't commit more fouls than Palace and Southampton…
UP step Newcastle.
Worst consistent fouling I think I've ever witnessed.#EFC

‘Time wasting, 11 behind the ball and kicking lumps out of the home side..”
‘Newcastle fans are a disgrace. You deserve Mike Ashley’
‘Can’t be dropping points at home to Newcastle Huddersfield and West Ham at home and expect to challenge top 4/6’
‘That Newcastle side has to be one of the worst at Goodison in a long time.. some sides they have had in their past and now they get served up that ****. Time wasting as early as the 10th min..frustrating’
‘Two easily winnable points lost’
‘Not good enough that. Have to be beating those teams. Too many players didn’t turn up.’
‘It wasn’t their defence it was our final ball’
‘Couldn’t score 2 ***** goals against NEWCASTLE’
‘Last night I saw many Newcastle players deliberately and maliciously raking Everton players’ achilles throughout the match at Goodison. 5 Newcastle men were booked. I’ve not seen anything like it since Leeds in the 70s.’
‘Newcastle are the new Stoke. Sit back, very organised, kick *** out of opponents and try to score on the break. Need to learn to break these sides down’
In their defence, there were a few online who praised our organisation – feeling Everton just found it too difficult to break Benitez’s well drilled side down on the night:
found it hard to break them down tonight, brilliant game plan from Newcastle. killed us from creating anything. learn and move on, simple. #EFC

I don’t think we deserved anything more from the game if I’m being honest, a draw was a fair result. Newcastle came to frustrate and did but we simply were not good enough. Onto the next! Watford on Monday now is now a massive game! #EFC

I like most Everton fans I have come across, but some may need to realise that spending hundreds of millions and having 76% possession doesn’t give you a god-given right to beat us – even if our style wasn’t easy on the eye.
