Benitez says this NUFC youngster will be handed his PL debut ‘soon’ after impressing in training

Rafa Benitez has admitted that top Newcastle United youngster Sean Longstaff will be handed his Premier League debut soon – hinting that he could be given his big chance over the busy festive period.

After standing out in the U-23’s, impressing on loan at Blackpool last season and taking his chance over pre-season, the talented midfielder was handed a new four-year contract earlier this week – with him also making Rafa’s last two matchday squads.

He’s yet to feature in the league this season, with his only senior appearance this year coming in our league cup defeat to Forest, however it seems like a matter of time before he’s given a chance in the side.

Here’s what Rafa said when asked if he’ll be making his top flight debut soon:

“Yeah, sooner, for sure.

“I am really pleased with him because he has done very well in every training session.

“The fact we gave him a contract is because we believe he can be a good player for Newcastle United.”

Longstaff looks a real talent and a player who’s looked for a while like he’s too good to be playing at U-23 level.

Ki, Diame and Shelvey are all ahead of him in the pecking order, but with Hayden wanting out and looking out of sorts and us also lacking options in that number 10 role, let’s hope he gets his big chance under Benitez soon enough.

It sounds like he will!
