Newcastle 1-2 Wolves: Sickening stuff at St James’ as huge Mike Dean mistake costs NUFC

A devastating afternoon. We may have made mistakes and did shoot ourselves in the foot in the end, but Mike Dean missing a clear elbow on Ayoze Perez has changed a game we could and should have won.

If he sees this Willy Boly red card – which would’ve made it 10-men apiece and handed us a penalty to go 2-1 up – it would have been a  VERY different story today.

Rafa was as angry as I’ve ever seen him in his post-match interview, with him demanding that VAR is introduced. Can you blame him when decisions like today have cost us as they have done?

We were in control and in a good position to win after Perez’s equaliser sent us into half time on the up. Although two errors from Lascelles for their goals and a big mistake from Yedlin leading up to the red card have cost us, it’s hard to accept defeat today after such big decision

This was a huge game for several reasons, so a defeat of this nature is so tough to take. It was a chance to respond at St James’ Park after being hammered by West Ham in our last home outing and an opportunity to pull six points clear of the drop zone – which was perhaps the most important thing given our Premier League security will play a huge part in convincing potential new buyers to seal a deal before the new year.

On a positive note (little consolation I know), Rondon was superb – holding up the ball well, running himself into the ground and having a huge hand in the goal – Perez responded from his horror show against West Ham and Atsu and Ki did well, but it’s a costly day, with Yedlin suspended, Fernandez picking up an injury and Lascelles having arguably his worst performance since we got promoted.

Huddersfield and Fulham in our next two will be absolutely massive key given we face a VERY tough run after Christmas (see upcoming fixtures below):

  • Huddersfield (A)
  • Fulham (H)
  • Liverpool (A)
  • Watford (A)
  • Man Utd (H)
  • Chelsea (A)
  • Cardiff (H)
  • Man City (A)
  • Tottenham (A)

Two huge games now await between now and Christmas and we now MUST respond against Huddersfield on Saturday – for reasons both on and off the pitch.

  1. At least Olly mentions the elbow on Ayoze. That was the pivotal part of the game and was obvious to everybody except Mike Dean who had a perfect view. Ryder didn’t even mention it in his match report – although I am sure he will change it later. Clown.

  2. Even Chris “the intern” Waugh is saying that Dean always “courts controversy” on Tyneside. He couldn’t come out and say it in the paper but he knows Dean is a biased tw@t who whenever there is a touch and go decision will give it against NUFC. Guardian report said that some other Refs would have given a yellow to Yedlin so that wasn’t cut and dried for everyone either. If pushed I would say it was red but there was enough doubt there to give a yellow and not make yourself the centre of attention. But that is Mike Dean all over.

We had Clattenberg over here recently doing a TV pregame. There another preening t!t who makes it all about himself with his WC and Champions League tattoos and his new hair transplant.

  3. Mike Dean told Perez he thought the ball had hit him in the face.
I have to be honest – in real time, I didn’t see the elbow. I was annoyed with Dean for not stopping play coz Perez went down with a head injury – if Wolves had scored I would have been foaming coz it should have been stopped. Part of me thinks that’s coz Perez too often goes down and feigns injury.
But on the replay, not only did he not feign injury, he was clearly elbowed in the face – should have had a penalty and Boly should have been sent off.
But that was with the aid of slow motion replays, and the more I’ve seen it, the more sure I am – I dare bet if Dean has seen the replay he would accept he got it wrong.
But he doesn’t have that in the 90mins, and I can understand why he didn’t give it if he thought the ball hit Perez in the face.

  4. Last thing about Dean and then I will shut up.

If you can make a prediction the day before that any pivotal decisions will go against NUFC and then there are 2, and they do, then that tells you something.

He did let a pull back by lascelles go but that was not pivotal.

  5. I know I have black and white glasses but this bias is real. We never get players sent off against us and we never get awarded penalties. How many have we had since we returned to the PL?

Rooney played half a season for Everton last year and had 4 penalties. Palace’s top scorer was a fullback last year with I think 7 penalties. How many penalties has Milner scored?

      (Quote)

  6. I was mostly frustrated with Perez trying that through ball in added time rather than taking it to the corner and playing out time. That was naive, but for none of his team mates to make a tackle in their final attack was just a joke!!. Did none of them see the danger and think ‘sod it, I’ll take the yellow card’.

Does anyone know what happened with Fernandez by the way? Was he injured?. That had a big bearing on the game too imo and Yedlin never looked comfortable in that back 3 – not sure that was the right move either. I’d have went Dummett, or put Longstaff in and packed the midfield.

  7. An unlucky call for sure, but our defending was a fucking joke. We let them maraud back at us a few times, shocking defending for a lot of the match really, our mistakes cost us more than the decisions and I have to say Yedlin deserved that red card. Our full backs with Yedlin and Manquillo…absolutely painful, Manquillo killed all our attacks once he came on, and he can’t fucking defend either. Think Perez showed his worth again, as usual being one of the only goal threats in the team aside from Rondon.

      (Quote)

  8. Kim – thanks, hopefully it’s not a bad one coz he’s been our best defender so far this season. I think Schar was only suspended for today.
I thought Clark was ok today but Lascelles looked well of pace.

      (Quote)

  9. Trying not to get too critical but Lascelles has to be mentioned again. I have never been totally sold on him, not since the first game he ever played for NUFC in a friendly in Milwaukee that I saw live. He let a player score from a free look on the edge of the box and then 5 minutes later gave away a penalty. 2 down after 15 minutes and all Lascelles.

I couldn’t believe that he was being rated as 30 million and thought a lot of that was down to Lejuene. But they seemed to play well together and that is what matters in a 4 at the back and not really who is the dominant partner. There were even some stats from when Lascelles was out showing we hardly ever won without him in the team. Those were from like a short 10 game sample and I think that is one of those stats that is actually just a coincidence.

Fast forward to this year and I saw Eddie Howe say they targeted Yedlin and Lascelles on the right as our weakest link. I think other teams have now cottoned on.

He is good at last ditch challenges but can be a liability as well. He has to play with the right partner(s) though and I a not sure if Yedlin’s jaunts upfield help either of them.

I am not just saying this because they were caught out today, I mentioned Eddie Howe after the Bournemouth game and have wondered about a Lascelles off and on since Rafa made him captain.

Wont have to worry about the Lascelles/Yedlin axis with a 3 match ban for DeAndre and Schar and hopefully Lejuene will help out soon.

      (Quote)

  10. Lascelles has a bad game today. Not sure he’s comfortable in a back there. They had more threatening players in the final third which was pretty disappointing in itself.

      (Quote)

  11. Eric – I still rate Lascelles and Yedlin to a lesser degree. I think if you look at what £30m buys in a CB, he’s not out of place – the likes of Smalling, Jones, Luiz, Keane at Everton – there’s a mistake in each of them. Even the likes of Stones who was more again.
Yedlin definitely is better offensively than defensively which causes a big problem at times – but I think both coz around £5m each.

Hopefully Fernandez isn’t serious and with Dummett on the bench, he’ll probably be back at LB in a back 4. But he’ll probably put Manquillo RB and I’d go Sterry.

      (Quote)

  12. Somebody on Eds said it has been 147 games since a red card was awarded against one of our opponents.

  13. We will have plenty to choose from soon at centre back. I am happy to put Lascelles in that mix as he is sometimes good. But maybe he shouldn’t be an automatic first choice. Rafa even dropped him last year when he was captain.

What we need is no more positional mistakes and more clearances from set pieces to justify his inclusion and for him to keep out players who are better on the ball.

I also don’t think he should be playing with a similar style player. I split them into Lascelles, Clark and Fernandez as the enforcers and Schar and Lejuene as the ball players. If we play 2 CBs we should be picking one from each group.

We only scored 39 goals last year so we need to cut out the stupid mistakes at the back.

      (Quote)

  14. Chronic did their ratings and they were off on quite a few. Ryder gave lascelles and Yedlin a 6. Dubravka got a 7. He did just about everything right. Possibly could have knocked the ball further away for their second goal but that would be harsh. So. And I wont make a habit of ratings and will leave to Olly.

    Mike Dean – 0. What a tw@t.

Mark Preening Ponce Clattenberg – 0, agreed with Dean. Another tw@t

    Dubravka – 9

Yedlin – 3 at fault for 1st goal, stupid mistake and put it in Mike Dean’s hands to make himself centre of attention

Lascelles 3, useless for both goals

Ki, Perez and Rondon – 8, played well.

      (Quote)

  15. Lascelles has dropped to number 5 in my list of preferred centre backs. He was at fault for WH’s first and now Wolves first. Should also have cleared for Everton’s goal too. He’s just poor all round particularly positionally and with the ball.
So niave in those last few minutes. It should have been 9 men in and around our penalty area.

  17. Lascelles wouldn’t be the first one to believe his own hype leading to lack of focus and concentration. He was being talked about as a replacement for John Terry, youngest captain, possible England call-up and new contract. Has it all gone to his head?

I’m with georgio that he has to prove himself now. I didn’t see the West Ham or Everton games but I take Georgio’s word that Lascelles was at fault because it has been happening all season. In other games there have also been mistakes that have luckily not led to goals. He has almost become the new Steven Taylor where he makes some last ditch clearances but they are due to lack of positional awareness in the first place.

Most goals against from set-pieces in the PL (10) says a lot about your centre backs. It is not all Jamaal but he is the one constant.

  19. Kenedy looks as though he doesn’t want to be here. Lazy and unfit. After the Everton game I thought Murphy would be persevered with. Talking to a friend today I suggested we should have Sorensen on the bench. He said that perhaps it was thought he wasn’t ready. My reply was to say that did he think Joselu was? It also looks now that getting rid of Mbemba was a big mistake and I do think Rafa is very loyal to players who don’t deserve it.

  20. I see the retired Refs are standing behind Mike Dean. Clattenberg and now Dermot Gallagher. What a surprise. All these Pr!cks sticking together. If you ever saw Clattenberg’s explanation of the Battle of the Bridge, you would know what a complete idiot he his – he said he didn’t want to make himself the centre of attention so he ignored obvious yellow cards. He actually said that. That led to the game getting out of control but Clattenberg said it was a deliberate ploy on his part that he had devised BEFORE the game. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard from a Ref – aren’t you supposed to Referee the game occurring in front of you as it develops and in strict adherence to the laws of the game and to be impartial? I think Howard Webb had the same idea when he didn’t send Nigel de Jong off for that Kung Fu kick in the WC final and that paved the way for Van Bommel to assault every Spaniard that came within 10 feet of him.

Refs like these are not impartial. They go into games with set ideas and they are self promoters, all about themselves and are biased, mainly in favour of the big teams.

Anyway, it was obvious by the way Ayoze went down that he had not merely been hit by the ball. The force was such that it knocked him sideways. But Mike Dean’s pals will say otherwise because they stick together so they can keep their easy gigs at the newspapers and welcome Dean to their club when he retires. Is that soon? He is 50.

I don’t think I have ever seen Rafa this mad before and he has seen a few bad referring decisions in his time.

  21. Saw the stat again about sendings off and supposedly it is 145 since another team had one against us. The same post said our players see red on average once every 9 games. Not sure if that is true, but if it is anywhere close there is something going on. We are not a particularly dirty team.

Spurs players never get penalized for high tackles and stamps.

      (Quote)

  22. I usually don’t have a particular bee in my bonnet about Refs unless I see something stupid said like with Clattenberg or something so egregious and purposefully blind like Manchester United’s Howard Webb at the World Cup.

There is something going on with NUFC though. Those stats just do not occur by happenstance. It has gone on too long.

The thing that does get my goat is physically unfit Refs. They must have some fitness tests but some just cannot keep up. Lee Mason for example. And who is the one that is about 2 stone overweight? John Moss?

How can you possibly make consistent decisions if you are constantly 30 yards behind the play? That didn’t happen yesterday, Mike Dean is just an incompetent self-promoter.

      (Quote)

  23. And if you can remember, that WC final between Spain and Holland was probably the worst in living memory because Howard Webb lost control and let the Dutch kick lumps out of Spain. And these are supposed to be the best Refs we have!

Eric – I saw Gallagher this morning say he thought Dean got it right. So that’s 3 referees who all think that wasnt a red card and penalty – that’s worrying IMO. Even with VAR that decision isn’t guaranteed then.

  25. Sharpy: they are like a little club, all employed by the papers and I am sure on the talk and golf circuit. They stick together.

The only one I have seen go against the grain is Keith Hackett who gives annual ratings for the telegraph. I don’t always agree with him but he dishes out 4s and 5s. Some he won’t even rate numerically. I am guessing because he would be too insulting. He gave Jon Moss a 3 in 2016 and said he was like a bull in a china shop, always making rash decisions. He also said Craig Pawson needed to drop down a division. He gave Dean a 7 so he is not perfect.

      (Quote)

  26. Boly knew exactly what he was doing. He knew where Ayoze was and flung his elbow at him whether he was looking directly at him or not. The players have become very adept at covering up these cynical fouls. You see it when they do scissor tackles and when they go through the man to get the ball and then make a circle sign at the Ref. And diving! And then there are the high press teams fouling when they lose the ball so they can regain their shape.

If you can predict which way the decisions will go like with Mike Dean and previously with Howard Webb and Man U then there is something wrong. And with our record of penalties and sendings off there is something wrong there as well.

And… if a Ref has a reputation like Mike Dean has for making everything about himself then there has to be something to it.

I think at 300 million NUFC are a bargain and at 400 a bit of a risk. All based on relegation, if we were mid-table it would be a no-brainer because there really isn’t anybody else to buy.

  34. I know these are not totally equivalent but Borunemouth’s Tyrone Mings refused to go on Talksport because of their coverage of the racism against Raheem Sterling. Not just the Chelsea fans but the papers. Dave Kitson in talksport had said that Sterling brought it on himself by showing off his bling lifestyle. Kitson is at The Mirror I think.

I think some of our ex-players especially should stay away from Talksport because of the **** they always talk about Ashley. Of course they won’t and will make the excuse that they offer balance. Maybe they are right, but I do applaud Mings for his stance.

  35. The result and refereeing against Wolves were bad but there are some positives:

    * After indifferent starts to the season, Atsu and Perez looked good.

    * Rondon looks a handful when fully fit. Maybe we even have a direct free kick taker now instead of Shelvey blasting it over the bar.

    * Ki was good again.

    * Dummett on the bench so probably available for Huddersfield.

    * 3 CBs looks like a system we can use as long as there are no brain farts from Lascelles and Yedlin

    * Looks like we will have a choice of 5 centre backs in the next few weeks with Lejeune making his return. If Jamaal’s form improves then stick with him, if not, we have alternatives. Not sure if Rafa will even give Lascelles the chance to show him though after that stinker against Wolves and iffy form this year.

    * Dubravka still looking good. We are going to need him.

      (Quote)

  36. Olly: I don’t think it would be that difficult to free up a loan spot in January. We can probably do a straight swap Gayle for Rondon. Yes, Rondon had a higher release clause but he also now has his contract running down. There was that weird deal where WBA supposedly secured a 1 year extension (if true) but that still puts him on a short term contract. We have control of Gayle until July 2021.

Plus, isn’t Muto Gayle’s direct replacement?

Getting Rondon permanently would probably only be a short term fix for any new owner with ambition. BUT WE NEED A SHORT TERM FIX because of the danger of relegation. Then we could loan Solanke or Loftus Cheek and hopefully do a permanent deal for Almiron.

All pie in the sky at the moment, but actually a relatively cheap fix if we could get Almiron for 20 million. It might even appeal to the Fatman.

145 Premier League games since a Premier League opponent had a player sent off.

In that time NUFC have had 18 players sent off (2 were rescinded but that only adds to the problem because it still affected the game they got the red cad and shows the Ref was wrong to do it).

That’s an average of 1 every 8 games.

  40. I don’t know if anybody reads the Daily Mail but they did a journalistic hitjob yesterday on that Chelsea fan who allegedly screamed a racial slur at Raheem Sterling. They have taken it down now, but they appointed themselves judge and jury and printed several pictures of him, at the game and with friends. They interviewed people who sit by him at the game and even his neighbours who all said they had never heard him say anything racist in their presence. They named him and said he lives in Basingstoke and even showed a picture of his house.

This man has apologized and lost his job at age 60 but denies he made any racial comments. I don’t know if that is true but I do know that there are a lot of nutters out there and that the Mail have made it very easy to find this guy. Hell, all they would need to do is to look for the gang of tabloid photographers outside his house.

My guess is this guy will have to go into hiding. I am not condoning what he did but he has been convicted of nothing so far. And this is coming from the Mail who Sterling identified as writing stories with racist undertones about him in the past and stoking racial hatred.

      (Quote)

  41. Some may say the Chelsea fan deserves all he gets, but does he? He has been accused but not convicted. Even if he said what is alleged that doesn’t mean some nutcase should dish out vigilante justice which is exactly what The Mail are stoking up and giving any crazy person the means to find this guy.

      (Quote)

  42. A similar thing without the racial element happened in Chicago a few years ago. A baseball fan leaned into the field of play and caught a baseball that prevented an out. This happens dozens of times a year but this time it may have prevented The Chicago Cubs going to the World Series.

There were TV crews camped outside this guy’s house and work for weeks. They interviewed his friends and his workmates. He couldn’t leave the house. His name was Steve Bartman and they even made a documentary about it and the game is known as the Bartman Game. It went on for years and he had to go into hiding eventually leaving the state and changing his name.

The TV stations actually know his new name and where he lives but will not release it because they know what they did to him and know this man deserves some privacy.

Again, I am not defending the Chelsea fan because I do not know if he did, or did not, racially abuse Sterling and neither does The Daily Mail.

Listen if those blokes have used racist words towards him, then they deserve whatever they get – but it should be proven first.
I have to say, Sterling’s reaction didn’t suggest there was racism used – nor did the reaction of those around the blokes – including the black guy sat 3 seats away who was interviewed on Good Morning Britian via telephone who said he heard nothing racist – again, not to say they didn’t, but it should be properly investigated imo.

I would have expected Sterling yo draws the refs attention or a steward or police officer to it though – positive action, rather than a tweet after the event and blaming the media.
I actually think the lad has taken a lot of unfair stick through his young career so far – mostly suggesting he’s either ***** or a bit of a mercenary or gangster wannabe – whether that has racist undertones or not, I don’t know. It would take a brave or stupid media outlet to do that in today’s climate though.

  53. All a bit of a mess, Sharpy. I personally don’t think we’re close to signing him at all. If we are it would mean the club is about to be sold as Jabba would not pay that much.

  54. Truth is as always – nobody knows anything about NUFC. Nobody talks to the media apart from the usual ‘legends’ making wishful guesses. That includes takeovers and possible signings. My doubt about Almiron is he strangely reminds me of the similarly frail Cabella. You’ll be tackled by Boly and Wes Morgan son!

  55. It’s funny watching Twitter when takeover talks are happening. So many silly rumours it’s hilarious. Why can’t people just accept people are doing due diligence and until that’s done nothing will happen at all. The fact it hasn’t happened or no bid has been made really doesn’t mean it won’t happen. It might not happen but blimey – give it a chance.

  56. Stu – yeah I agree, it’s the old no news could be good news scenario – but not according to some.
I think looking at a wider picture, the fact it hasn’t been quashed by the club yet is promising. It was pretty quickly last year when Mandy was sniffing – yes she said there were 3 options on the table, but the club themselves came out pretty quickly and said it was a none starter.
The other potential positive is that Ashley seems totally focused on is High Street ventures and worming his way into takeover of Debenhams.

  57. It’s quite scary to think that Ashley could have such a stronghold on High Street shopping outlets – Sports Direct, HoF and Debenhams is a big workforce that will need protecting from his Dickensian leadership.
He’s really putting it on Debenhams at the moment with them on their knees and he rocks up offering his £40m ‘interest free’ loans. But we all know that whilst the loan may be interest free – it doesn’t come without something in return. For us it has been the SD advertising – with Debenhams, I suspect it will be the gradual increase of shares. I only see it as a matter of time before he chokes the life out of them too.

  58. Sharpy – Debenhams are on their ****. He will just wait for them to deteriorate further and then just take the best bits when they have no other option.

Personally I do believe he would like to sell NUFC. Whether a buyer comes up with the money is another matter.

Sharpy, I read that he wanted an extra 10% in shares for his “interest free loan”… so not really interest free and not really a loan.. he will wait until they go under which may not be far away, all debts cancelled when they are declared bankrupt, then he will take the lot, probably for less than the £40million he was going to give them…

  60. Yes I feel pretty confident he will sell NUFC too. The heat is on him to spend money on our club and it would have to be decent money to take that heat off him now.
But if he selling NUFC for £300m – no more outgoings on NUFC and that £300m could buy up an awful lot of the high street.

Is this happening because the politicians are too busy pi$$ing round with Brexit and have taken their eye off the ball, or would it be happening anyway?.
Either way, I fear for this Country at the moment. I only see a lot of unemployment from the retail industry.
It needs someone to breath life back into it, not scavenge off the left over bones of it like Ashley will.

  61. Hells bells he’s after Hamleys toy store as well now if news reports are to be believed. Formal bids due after Christmas – which could tie nicely in with a £300m windfall for Ashley around that time too.

This is starting to resemble Rodney’s nightmare in Fools and Horse when Del and Damien take over the World.
