If it wasn’t bad enough that Mike Dean let Will Boly get away with an elbow to the face of Ayoze Perez yesterday, the Spaniard has admitted that Dean’s reason for not giving a foul was because it was the ball that hit his face – and not Boly’s elbow.
Perez and Rafa were incensed after the game, with the gaffer calling for VAR to be introduced – and it’s no surprise given this was a blatant penalty and potential red card offence.
Here’s what Perez said after the game, revealing what Mike Dean told him after the incident:
“I don’t know what we have to do to get a penalty. The guy elbowed me really hard straight in the nose but the referee said it was the ball that hit me not the elbow, even though I was bleeding”
I find this an absolutely ridiculous excuse by Mike Dean.
Granted we have replays to watch and they don’t, but how on earth does it look like the ball hit Perez and not the elbow? His nose was gushing with blood and it would’ve had to be a rather hard hit for a ball to do that.
Even if he did think this , Perez was down because of a head injury and so the game should have been stopped. Wolves went down the other end and would’ve scored had it not been for a decent save by Dubravka.
Had Dean seen this and given the penalty, there would have been a resulting red card which would’ve meant 10 v 10, the game could’ve ended up so different. It was not one of Deans better games, with rather dubious decisions made against either side.
This should not get away from the fact that we threw the game away and failed to hold on for a point, but you can understand Rafa’s frustrations after the game.
