Rafa Benitez battling Premier League duo to sign Ligue 1 left-back in January – Report

According to the Mirror, Newcastle are interested in Bordeaux left-back Maxine Poundje – with Fulham and Burnley also keen to sign the Frenchman in January.

The 26-year-old left-back has been a regular in Bordeaux’s side so far this season, helping them boast the 6th best defence in Ligue 1, as well as bagging a goal and an assist in 22 appearances so far.

Poundje – a former France youth international – has been with Bordeaux throughout his entire career after breaking through the club’s academy in 2011, but it seems he is now attracting interest from several Premier League sides.

He’s not the only Bordeaux player we’ve been linked with in recent months either, with it it being confirmed that club scouts have been watching top scoring winger Fracois Kamano on several occasions this season.

Time will tell if he’s a legitimate target of Rafa’s, however it is clear that a new left-back is high on his radar – and someone like Poundje could be seen as a budget option given our history of finding bargains in France.

Here’s him up against Kylian Mbappe earlier this year:
