PLAYER RATINGS: Liverpool 4-0 Newcastle – Two 7’s, a 4 & one abysmal 3

Another game to forget for Newcastle, but what did we expect when up against one of Europe’s top sides?

Here’s an assessment of each player’s performance and my marks out of 10:

NUFC XI – (3-4-1-2): Dubravka (7)– Fernandez (6), Lascelles (4), Dummett (5) – Yedlin (6), Hayden (5), Diame (6), Ritchie (7) – Kenedy (5) – Muto (6), Joselu (3).

STARTING 11:

Dubravka – 7 – Was sharp off his line and stood up well to deny Mane’s one on one and showed his reflexes once again to tip over Shaqiri’s goal-bound free kick. Another assured display despite us looking pretty poor at the back.

Fernandez – 6 – Headed away several crosses. Struggled with their pace at times – as any centre-back would, but came to the rescue on one occasion to cover for Lascelles’ big mistake on the ball. Can’t really fault him too much today.

Lascelles – 4 – Showed a real lack of awareness when heading straight to Lovren for their goal. Recovered pretty well for the rest of the first half but almost cost us again in the second half with a horror pass in his own half. Doesn’t look the same player at the minute.

Dummett – 5 – Kept Salah quiet in a left-sided centre back role in the first half, but brought him down to give away a penalty and hand them a 2-0 lead just minutes into the second half. It was so soft, but he shouldn’t have even given the referee something to think about.

Yedlin – 6 –  Did pretty well in fairness. Stuck to his task pretty well and kept Robertson quiet-ish. Got into good positions but final ball not always great; although there wasn’t always much to hit.

Hayden – 5 – Played higher than expected at times in the first half, with him pressing and making runs in advanced areas at times. Didn’t do a bad job and got around the pitch well, but he is quite limited on the ball and left Diame exposed at times.

Diame – 6 – Made some vital blocks and tracked well their attackers well – with him doing brilliantly to get back and cut out a big chance for Van Dijk in the first half. Did a solid job and worked hard, but he was fighting a losing battle against a relentless Liverpool side.

Ritchie – 7 – Put in several great crosses from the left and looked after the ball better than most. Tracked back well and did his part going forward. He’ll be wishing it was Rondon on the end of his crosses.

Kenedy – 5 – Played in more of a number 10 role between our front two and midfield duo. Carried the ball well at times and showed flashes, but final ball and decision making frustrating. Needs to know when to release it.

Muto – 6 – Showed real energy early on and was sharp on the ball and busy in and around the Liverpool midfield. Drifted out the game in the second half but looked bright at times. It’s a shame he’ll be away for January at the Asian Cup.

Joselu – 3 – Really, really poor. We know he’s limited, but nothing at all came off for him – with him misplacing simple passes and missing a huge chance with his head early on.

SUBS:

Longstaff – 6 – A brilliant place to make your first Premier League appearance, not that he got many chances on the ball given Liverpool’s late dominance. He did enjoy a nice bit of play late on however, setting up a counter for Yedlin before seeing a shot well saved by Alisson.

Murphy – N/A – Not sure he touched the ball – although few Newcastle player did in the second half.

  1. How did you manage to find 3 points for Joeslu, Olly? If I could give -1 it would be too much. Shocking..,
