Three and a half years on from leaving the club, former centre-back Mike Williamson is now plying his trade with North-East neighbours Gateshead – and Newcastle fans can’t quite believe the piece of skill he’s just pulled off.
The 35-year-old made over 150 appearances for the club, being a a solid if not unspectacular defender on his day, but it’s fair to say he was never blessed with skill or any sort of quality on the ball.
A few years on and he’s not only playing in the National League in a Heed side managed by former Mag Steve Watson, he did this in their 1-0 defeat against Maidenhead United at the International Stadium today:
After Saturday’s dull affair at St James’ Park, at least we can enjoy this rare moment of magic from Mike.
We knew he could head, block and clear balls all day long, but I don’t think anyone saw this coming – a moment Gateshead have quite rightfully milked for all its worth.

Come on, “solid”? He was average at best and not too far ahead of Bramble or Boumsong.
As for not believing what he did, seriously? I don’t think Messi has too much to worry about.
