Alan Shearer sends message to NUFC duo after FA Cup heroics at Blackburn

Alan Shearer has sent a congratulatory message to both Callum Roberts and Sean Longstaff after both scored their first senior goals for the club during Tuesday night’s FA Cup win at Blackburn.

The performances of both academy products were two of the big positives to take from a rollercoaster night at Ewood Park, with the pair no doubt boosted by praise from the Newcastle Legend.

Here’s what Shearer said after the U-23 duo scored our two opening goals in our 4-2 win at Blackburn on Tuesday night:

Longstaff looks like he’s been playing for years. He’s very composed on the ball, never stops running and isn’t afraid to try something different, scoring from outside the box, albeit via a huge deflection.

As for Roberts, he took his goal brilliantly and showed flashes from the number 10 role. He still looks raw and tired as the game went on, but did show the odd nice faint or drop of the shoulder to beat defenders.

He is further away from the first team than Longstaff, but a loan move to a low-league Championship or promotion chasing League One club would benefit him greatly.

Longstaff has impressed me enough to say I would have him in ahead of Isaac Hayden as soon as the likes of Mo Diame is fit – starting with Saturday’s crucial game with Cardiff.

Well done to both. A brilliant week for them and great to see two local lads take their big chance in the first team.
