Benitez shares injury update on Shelvey, Diame, Dummett, Lascelles & Schar ahead of Cardiff clash

Rafa Benitez has confirmed that Diame and Lascelles could be fit to face Cardiff tomorrow – but Paul Dummett and Jonjo Shelvey will miss out once again.

Rafa also mentioned Clark, Hayden and Schar – who all picked up knocks in the midweek win at Blackburn – however it seems all three should be fine.

Both Diame and Lascelles were pictured taking part in training yesterday (as well as Kenedy who looks set to return), but the likes of Dummett and Shelvey were nowhere to be seen – so it’s no surprise to see both ruled out.

Here’s what Rafa’s just had to say on the injury front ahead of tomorrow’s crucial game with Cardiff.

“We have to assess some players, but I’m optimistic with Hayden, Clark, Schär, Lascelles – they can be available, if everything is fine.”

“He (Diame) was training today and we have to assess him.”

“Dummett is getting better but not ready yet.”

There was no mention of Kenedy, but the Brazilian was pictured in training yesterday – suggesting he’s overcome a toe problem that’s kept him out recently.

With all this injury mews in mind, you’d think tomorrow’s line up will look something like this – provided Diame and Lascelles are fit enough to start:

(5-2-2-1 ) Dubravka – Yedlin, Lascelles, Fernandez, Lejeune, Ritchie – Diame, Longstaff – Perez, Atsu – Rondon
