Alan Shearer names the 3 NUFC players who impressed him most vs Cardiff

Alan Shearer has praised Fabian Schar’s ‘commanding’ performance in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Cardiff – also praising the ‘excellent’ Salomon Rondon and Sean Longstaff.

Both big Al and us fans haven’t had much to shout about, with us winning just TWICE at St James’ Park all season before Cardiff, but Saturday’s victory was a much needed return to winning ways on home soil – and the first time we’ve scored 3 all season in the league!

Here’s what Shearer’s had to say about Fabian Schar following his match-winning display – also praising Rondon and Longstaff:

“He’s been a decent buy – £3.5million from Deportivo.

“He’s playing the right side of the centre of defence and I thought he was excellent, commanding in the back four and winning headers for his team. He could have had a hat-trick and was a danger from set pieces all afternoon.

“I thought he had an excellent game along with Rondon and young Sean Longstaff.”

I couldn’t agree more with Shearers comments. Schar had his best game in a black and white shirt and whilst he gets headlines for scoring , looked solid at the back also. He has been in and out of the team this season but yesterday’s performance should cement his place in the team for the next few weeks at least.

Rondon was superb. He’s like a battering ram at times and holds the ball up brilliantly, enabling wingers to make runs beyond him and getting us further up the pitch. He’ll be disappointed not to have grabbed a goal but his all round game was just what we need in a number 9.

I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again – it looks like Sean Longstaff has been playing at the top level for years. He keeps the ball well, keeps it ticking over in the midfield and is not afraid to run with the ball and try something different.

You can see how much it means to him to be playing for his hometown club and he has the potential to be a first team regular for years if he keeps up this level of performance. No doubt praise from Alan Shearer will increase his confidence.

  1. What I love about Sean Longstaff is that he thinks about a pass, which is best and just a long punt up field.
