Speaking in response to news of our loan bid, BBC pundit Don Hutchinson believes Gelson Martins ‘could be worth £100m’ with the right development – being a player he urged a ‘couple of managers’ to sign 18 months ago.
This comes after news that Newcastle are in talks with Atletico Madrid to sign the 23-year-old on loan with an option to buy – and the ex-West Ham man is adamant he’d be a great signing for the club.
Here’s what Hutchinson said on Twitter about the Portuguese international, with him speaking highly about the winger – who he reveals came from the same academy as Cristiano Ronaldo:
It remains to be seen as to whether a deal for Gelson Martins will go through, however it sounds like Rafa is pushing to sign both him and Monaco left-back Antonio Barreca by the weekend.
Gelson hasn’t had a great start to life in Spain, scoring just one in 12 appearances for Atletico, however he was rated as one of the hottest prospects in Portugal just a year ago – with him bagging 13 goals and 13 assists for Sporting Lisbon.
