Sky Sports confirm NUFC’s interest in PSG, Monaco & Atletico Madrid trio – 2 loan bids submitted

Sky Sports have revealed that both Monaco’s Antonio Barreca and PSG’s Stanley N’Soki are left-back targets of Rafa Benitez’s this month – with Keith Downie also confirming our interest in Atletico Madrid’s Gelson Martins.

After we tried and failed to sign him on a permanent deal last summer, it’s no surprise to hear that PSG talent N’Soki is on Rafa’s radar, however Monaco’s Barreca is a new name linked on the left-back front.

On that front, Lee Ryder has just confirmed that Newcastle have now submitted a loan offer for Barreca.

As far as Gelson Martins is concerned, it seems our interest in signing the Portuguese winger IS genuine – with Sky’s north-east reporter Keith Downie now backing up claims from Spain and the Chronicle that we’ve made a loan move:

Here’s a snippet from Sky’s latest piece regarding our hunt for a new left-back, confirming Rafa’s interest in Barreca and N’Soki:

Monaco defender Antonio Barreca is one of a number of left-backs being considered by Newcastle United, according to Sky in Italy.

Rafael Benitez is keen to bring in another left-sided player, with Barreca and Paris Saint-Germain’s Stanley N’Soki – a player they also had interest in last summer – being monitored.

Barreca only joined Monaco from Torino last summer, and has since provided two assists in his nine first-team appearances.

However, the 23-year-old has been on the fringes of the first team since Thierry Henry’s arrival as manager, making appearances in the French Cup and Champions League, and, more recently, turning out for the club’s second team in National II.

It’s promising to hear, but it really does look like it’ll be loan deals at best this month if this update is anything to go by.

Fingers crossed folks. Let’s hope this is a sign that Rafa’s threat to quit has forced Ashley and co into action.
