Sky Sports confirm NUFC are in talks to sign duo – & Rafa also wants TWO attackers

Sky Sports have confirmed that Newcastle are in talks to sign Benfica’s Andreas Samaris – with Rafa also hoping to sign Monaco’s Antonio Barreca and ‘TWO attacking players’.

This backs up claims from the Chronicle and the Telegraph – who’ve also reported our interest in the Greek midfielder and Italian left-back – however they also claim that Rafa’s pushing to sign two attackers.

Here’s a snippet from Sky’s latest piece with just over 48 hours of the window remaining:

Newcastle are in talks with Benfica over a loan move for midfielder Andreas Samaris, Sky Sports News understands.

Manager Rafa Benitez has previously tried to sign the 29-year-old, who has been capped 33 times by Greece.

Samaris, who played against Manchester United in the Champions League last season, has featured only four times for Benfica this campaign.

Benitez is also keen to sign a left-back before Thursday’s deadline after his move for Lazio’s Jordan Lukaku fell through on medical grounds last Friday.

Newcastle are in talks with Monaco over a similar loan for Italian defender Antonio Barreca.

The 23-year-old, who started his career with Serie A side Torino, has played only nine times for the Ligue 1 side this season after joining them in the summer.

Benitez is hoping to add up to two attacking players before the close of the transfer window.

Samaris could give us a much needed midfield option, also allowing Hayden to leave as a result, while Barreca would finally give Rafa an attacking option at left-back.

The ‘two attackers’ that Rafa also wants before the close of play tomorrow could well be a striker (with Joselu in talks to leave) and a winger or number 10 with us ‘trying’ and failing to sign Gelson Martins and Miguel Almiron this month.
