Less than a year on from his return to Spain, former Newcastle midfielder Mikel Merino is continuing to make an impact in La Liga – this time with a stunning assist in Real Sociedad’s recent defeat at the Nou Camp.
The 22-year-old’s exit felt inevitable last summer, with talk of an early exit touted over the entire second half of the 2017/18 season.
He’s bagged 3 goals and 4 assists so far for Sociedad, with one of those coming in Barcelona over the weekend courtesy of this outrageous piece of vision and weight of pass:
He had an up and down season at St James’ Park, starting in stunning fashion but ending the season out of form as a result of a niggling back injury, but he’ll be on Benitez regrets letting go.
A release clause is said to have existed in his contract at Newcastle, allowing him to leave for just £12m last summer, however you can’t help but feel he’ll be worth double that before long.
A real case of what could have been for Benitez and NUFC.
You do realise he went after his release clause was met? How can Rafa regret it?

I do – I say as much in the article – but Benitez can still live to regret the fact his stint at SJP was cut short so soon after he signed.
Yes a release clause took him back to Spain, but Benitez will be frustrated to have lost such a talented player so quickly – and moments like this will make him regret the fact he left before his NUFC career had really took off.
