‘Exclusive’ claims NUFC wants to secure bargain deal for Premier League striker

According to Football Insider, Newcastle are showing interest in a deal to sign Danny Welbeck this summer.

The 28-year-old striker is currently out injured and is not expected to be given a new deal at Arsenal, meaning he’s set to be available as a free agent in a few month’s time.

It must be noted that Welbeck is an injury-prone player who’s nearing his 30’s, so this combined with the fact he’s likely to demand a hefty salary makes me wonder just how realistic this deal is, however – especially when a big spending Everton are also said to be in the running.

Here’s a snippet from Football Insider’s ‘exclusive’:

‘Newcastle United are setting their sights on signing Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck this summer, Football Insider understands.

‘The England international, 28, is out of contract at the end of the season and is not expected to be offered a new deal by the north London giants.

‘A source close to the player has told Football Insider that Newcastle are ready to battle Premier League rivals Everton as well as clubs across the Continent for the capture of Welbeck.

‘The north-east giants are keen on Welbeck regardless of whether manager Rafael Benitez commits to signing a new contract with the club amid protracted talks to replace his deal that expires in June.’

This is yet another ‘exclusive’ from Football Insider – the same people who said Rafa wanted Fulham’s Ryan Babel earlier this week – so this must be taken with a pinch of salt.

Yes he’s available for ‘nothing’, but he’d more than likely demand big money – with free agents notorious for this given the lack of transfer fee.
