An unofficial ‘player of the season‘ poll has been run on Twitter by Newcastle United fan account @NUFC360, and you may be shocked by the results.
The four nominees are Salomon Rondon, Ayoze Perez, Fabian Schar and Martin Dubrakva and after 6,322 votes, it’s Swiss centre-back Fabian Schar who’s come out on top.
The £3.5m summer signing gained 44% of the vote, with top scorer Ayoze Perez in second (29%), Salomon Rondon in third (22%) and Martin Dubravka way out in fourth place (5%):
Some have asked why the likes of Ritchie or Hayden weren’t included as nominees, but it must be said that only FOUR options can be added into a Twitter poll.
Back to the result. Has Schar been brilliant? Yes – he’s been a warrior at the back, scored some crucial goals and has shown incredible quality on the ball – but I’m baffled to see Salomon Rondon miss out on this one.
The Venezuelan has been involved in 44% of our goals this season & absolutely PIVOTAL to how we play. Has brought the best out of both Almiron and Perez, has run himself into the ground every week & has 16 goal involvements – bagging 9 goals and 7 assists over the season.
Some may argue that this isn’t a ‘shock’, however I struggle to see how Schar would gain more votes than Rondon when it comes to our player of the season – never mind TWICE the number of votes.
Perez has had a stunning 2019, Schar has proved to be an incredible signing and looks a quality player and Dubravka has been excellent aside from the odd mistake earlier this year, but I struggle to see how we’d have stayed up without Rondon contribution – and that says it all for me.
It is a shock result, because he’s only had 4 or 5 good games.
Short memories – that’s the problem!
