“Terrific talent” – South American expert praises 19-year-old striker as NUFC claims emerge

After reports that Newcastle have ‘made an approach’ to sign Jan Carlos Hurtado, South American football expert Peter Coates has described the Venezuelan as a ‘terrific prospect’.

Coates – a football writer, scout and commentator based in Argentina – has also revealed that the 19-year-old forward looks ‘certain’ to leave current club Gimnasia this summer, adding fuel to the fire as far as a potential summer move to St James’ Park is concerned.

Here’s what he tweeted after reports claimed we’d approached the players agent and planned to make a ‘concrete offer’ to sign Hurtado:

Hurtado stands 6ft tall and plays predominantly as a striker – although he has operated as right-winger at times during his current season in the Argentinian top flight.

He’s managed just 2 goals and 1 assist in 17 Primera Division appearances this season but his performances have clearly caught the eye, with Coateas also stating on Twitter that several clubs are interested in the Venezuelan star.

He only turned 19 just a few months ago but has already gained his first call-up to the Venezuelan national side, meaning he will already be familiar with current Newcastle United star Salomon Rondon.

Here’s him in action for his country:
