The club have stated that the 21-year-old is NOT for sale, however it’s interesting (and quite amusing!) to hear what those in Manchester have made of their latest transfer link.
Here’s what we’ve found on Twitter, with some rating him highly and believing he’d be a brilliant signing, while others ignorantly claim he’s ‘not a big enough name’ to be arriving at Old Trafford:
“That’s it! Bring in more mediocre British players. Are we building a Prem top4 team or a Championship outfit. HEAVEN HELP US !!!”
“The snobbery carries on. Watch the NUFC games, this lad can play. They’ve said he’s the closest they’ve seen to Carrick. Sure he’s not Carrick but we need to be realistic, we need a squad. This kid would die for the shirt! Give him a chance.”
“Have you seen him play yet? Guy is a baller. Declan Rice getting loads of attention but this lad has the tekkers to actually pass long. Could be a move that Carrick could get over the line.”
“Sean Longstaff? Are we taking the p***? I’m starting to think Olé ain’t the guy you know”
“Will be fantastic signing tbh. Rafa has really nurtured him well. The guy is so talented that Rafa dropped Jonjo Shelvey, Diame to the bench. Will be a good addition only injury is a concern.”
“Looks a good player reminds me of a young Carrick with his passing”
“This guy would be a good signing. I have watched him play for Newcastle multiple times this season and he would be a class squad option with potential to grow.”
“After a morning of De Ligt dreaming, this is more our level. Never even heard of this turnip”
“I only saw a few Toon matches but what I’ve seen of him he has potential & that English factor is a plus. He’s injured now though could be out for 4-6 months (knee ligament) I still say he’s maybe one to watch but not needed atm. Especially with McTominay. We should sign Rice”
“A few years back, we were trying to sign Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale. Now we’re after the likes of Sean Longstaff? No disrespect but what is happening to this club?”
“People might want to watch this guy play first before crying about it..”
I found a real mixed bag. Some have been mightily impressed by what they’ve seen of the 21-year-old during his impressive rise into Rafa’s first team, with the Carrick comparison’s coming out once again, while others are refusing to believe he’s good enough as he’s not a big name.
Let’s hope the club’s ‘not for sale’ stance remains all summer – not matter what bid may arrive from Old Trafford.
