Today marks Mike Ashley’s 12-year birthday as Newcastle United owner, and NUFC fans have taken to Twitter to highlight some of his most ‘memorable’ moments.
The comments below – which are found under #MikeAshleyDay on Twitter – offer a reminder of just how scandalous his reign at St James’ Park has been, with it sad to think that several young fans have never known anything but the Ashley-era.
Here’s some of the ‘best’ ones posted on social media today:
“Selling Andy Carroll for £35mill and bringing in Shefki Kuqi on a free. The Mike Ashley way.”
“Changing the stadium name to Sports Direct Arena.”
“KK: We can sign Sami Hyypia for £1.25 million MA: Sound I’ll get that sorted. (Bids £500k) KK: Is he coming then? MA: ..”
“Sacking Chris Hughton after beating Sunderland 5-1“
“Ruining our chances of selling the club to Sheikh Mansour (multi-billion Man City owner) because he got drunk in a Dubai bar and insulted the Islamic faith..”
“He’s bought more shops than players..”
“Hiring Joe Kinnear. And then hiring Joe Kinnear again.”
“Giving Pardew and co 8-year contracts for one successful season“
“Ashley’s friends: Kinnear Llambias Pardew Keys Wise Jimenez..Ashley’s enemies: Jonas Keegan Shearer… Judge a man by the company he keeps”
“I think making Kevin Keegan believe we would sign Bastian Scweinsteiger if we sold James Milner is up there! Making Joe Kinnear manager! Selling the club every January! Changing Shearers bar to the no 9 just to piss off a legend! Soo many great memories 2 choose”
“Changing the name of Shearer’s bar to “Nine” out of sheer pettiness”
“Joe Kinnear recommending Shane Ferguson to the club when he was loaned out from us.”
“When Vurnon Anita (£7m) was our only signing during a summer where we had to kick on and build our squad after finishing 5th and qualifying for the Europa League. We then finished 16th the next season & sold all our top players bit by bit. “
“Pretending to sell the club every time the transfer window opens”
12 years of unforgivable mistakes, sly moves, lies, awful appointments, 2 relegations, a stadium name change, legends of the club treated with contempt and a total disregard for the 52,000 fans who’ve lined his pockets for over a decade.
Do us a favour Mike and sell this club to someone who actually gives a damn.
