Sunderland coach set to join Newcastle United – Confirmed by North-East reporter

According to to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, highly-rated Sunderland coach Mark Atkinson is now on his way to Newcastle United.

Atkinson is the ‘Head of Coaching’ at the Stadium of Light and has been heavy involved at Academy / U-18 level, however it looks like he’s set to swap the Stadium of Light for St James’ Park this summer – and who could blame him.

It was reported last month that their would be a revamp at Academy level this summer, and it looks like we’ve snapped up another highly-regarded coach in Atkinson – who’s done well with Sunderland’s U-18 and is ‘very well thought of in the game’ says Hope.

This could be one of many changes too, with Neil Redfearn expected to be appointed as the new coach of our U-23’s and Ben Dawson set to take up a ‘technical role’ at the club.

Another bitter pill for the Mackems to swallow this summer, although I don’t think anyone could question a man moving from the third tier of English football up to the Premier League.
