After struggling with a series of injuries over the 2018/19 season, it’s fair to say the coming year will be a big one for talented Newcastle winger Victor Fernandez.
The 21-year-old is one of our biggest talents at U-23, has been included in Rafa Benitez’s pre-season plans over the past two-years and also impressed in our friendly win over Antwerp in March last year.
That said, injuries have been an issue. After a promising summer with the senior side, he’s only managed 45 minutes of competitive football since August.
It was hoped that he’d return in October last year, but a setback and resultant operation saw him miss the second half of the season.
He was pictured training with the first-team just a few weeks ago after 8 months out, and the latest picture he’s shared on social media suggests he’s bulked up quite a bit during his time out on the sidelines:
Not only can you see he’s been working on his upper body strength, it’s good to see him spending his spare time in his Newcastle top!
His current contract expires this summer, but the Chronicle claim that the Barcelona-born winger is staying at the club – suggesting he will be handed a new deal, despite the fact he was not mentioned in the club’s ‘retained list’ on Wednesday.
I really do hope he can get back fully fit and start showing what he can do next season.
Not only will he have to if he wants to have a future at the club, it would be such a shame to see such a promising young talent fail to break through due to rotten luck with injuries.
A big summer awaits for the Spaniard.
Let’s hope he can stay fit, show what he’s capable of over pre-season and start following in the footsteps of Sean Longstaff.
