Salomon Rondon speaks out after making history – but it could be bad news for NUFC

Salomon Rondon has shared an emotional message on social media after making history on Sunday night, with his goals against the USA making him the all-time top scorer for Venezuela.

The 29-year-old bagged two goals and an assist in the space of 20 minutes as his country romped to a 3-0 win over USA, with his brace taking him past former record holder Juan Arango.

It was great to see the big man continue his impressive form over the past year, but his performance will only draw more attention to the fact he’s available for just £16.5m this summer.

If anyone needing a decent striker watched him in action last season, they’d see his release clause as a bargain waiting to be had. If we’re counting goals for club AND country over the past year, Rondon has 17 goals and 8 assists in all (12 for Newcastle, 5 for Venezuela).

It’s a deal we should’ve wrapped up by now, but the longer we wait, the more competition we’ll face for his signature.

Nevertheless, here’s what the Venezuelan’s posted on Twitter after making history last night:

“When I was a kid, I always had a ball at my feet.

“I smashed a few windows at my grandma’s house with footballs.

“I watched games and couldn’t wait to grow up and play for a team and on professional pitches…

“As a kid, I had many dreams…

“I dreamed of playing for Venezuela and, once I achieved that, my goal was to beat Juan Arango’s record.

“After doing so today, I feel really happy and am so proud to be Venezuelan and continue to make history for my country.

“I give thanks to God, my family and all those who have been there for me.”

You’d like to think his performance last night may help convince Mike Ashley that he is worth buying at £16.5m and not ‘too old’, but I fear there’s little chance of him changing his mind.

I’d love to be proved wrong, however, with Rondon being the first signing we should be making this summer after Rafa Benitez.

Here’s his two goals last night for his country:
