Kevin Mbabu’s career continues to go from strength to strength following his move away from St James’ Park two years ago.
Not only has the 24-year-old just sealed a £8m move to Wolfsburg – a Bundesliga side set to compete in the Europa League next season – he’s now a regular in the Swiss national side and has just been named in UEFA’s ‘team of the tournament’ following their run to the semi-final of the Nations League.
Here’s the team itself, with the former Newcastle full-back named alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Dutch star Matthijs De Ligt.
UEFA Nations League team of the tournament: Pickford, Mbabu, Akanji, Dias, De Ligt, Guerreiro, De Roon, Silva, De Jong, Depay, Ronaldo
It will forever remain a bit of a mystery as to why Rafa Benitez let him go a few years ago. After all, it’s not like he looked out of place in the odd game he played at senior level.
Maybe he was homesick or was a character Rafa didn’t quite fancy, but you can’t help look at him now and wonder just how well he could fit into our side – especially now our system lends itself to all-action attacking wing-backs like himself!
