Newcastle ‘interested’ in £8m André Almeida deal – Dubious Report

According to reports in Portugal, Newcastle have shown interest in Benfica’s Andre Almeida – with the right-back said to be available for £8m this summer.

This comes from Record, who claim that Leicester and Brighton are also interested in the 6ft 1′ Portuguese international.

A new right-back will be on Rafa Benitez’s radar this summer and I’m sure he has whittled down a list of potential targets so he’s ready to make moves should he sign a new deal in the coming weeks, however this one must be filed under the ‘dubious’ category.

Almeida did bag 12 assists on Benfica’s way to the Liga NOS title last season, suggesting he’s an attack-minded player who could fit in well as a wing-back, however the fact he turns 29 in September makes you wonder if this is the sort of deal Mike Ashley would even consider – even if £8m seems a reasonable fee for their vice-captain.

Not only that, you’ve got to take Portuguese reports with a pinch of salt. These are the same people who said we were signing Ruben Semedo two summers ago, and don’t even get me started on Bas Dost!

Maybe Almeida is the sort of buy Benitez would make should he be backed by new owners who won’t stop him from signing players over the age of 26, but this one doesn’t sound too likely as things stand.
