Sky Sports confirm our worst fears...Mike Ashley opts for Steve Bruce
Sky Sports have confirmed in the last few moments that Steve Bruce is now Mike Ashley's 'no.1 target' to replace Rafa Benitez, with the club expected to now make an official approach.
This comes from Sky's north-east reporter Keith Downie, who claims that Bruce and Sheffield Wednesday are now 'braced' for an 'official approach' once he returns from their training camp in Portugal today.
Bruce himself said it was 'news to me' when asked about being the bookies favourite last night, however it's been widely reported that he'd jump at the chance to take the job on Tyneside if Newcastle came calling.
This has also been backed up by the Sun's David Coverdale, who claims that compensation shouldn't be a problem - with him expected to cost £1m.
Bruce may be a decent bloke, but he is not fit to take over at Newcastle United - especially when he'd be coming in to replace world class manager and elite level coach Rafa Benitez.
