According to the Mirror, former Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton has rejected the chance to replace Steve Bruce at Sheffield Wednesday.
I can’t help but feel sorry for Sheffield Wednesday in all of this – even though it may feel like we’re the real losers heading into a Premier League season with Steve Bruce!
Bruce has walked out on the Owls – a club which took a chance on him when his stock was low, gave him 1 month’s bereavement leave and backed him in the transfer market – all to become Mike Ashley’s yes man.
Now, to make matters worse, their alleged ‘top target’ Chris Hughton has snubbed their offer as they scramble for Bruce’s replacement.
Hughton would’ve been a brilliant replacement. He’s currently out of work after being sacked by Brighton at the end of last season, however his record at getting clubs promoted back to the top flight is second to none.
If only we could give Bruce back to Sheffield Wednesday and look at a far more competent replacement for Rafa Benitez. That said, I imagine Owls fans have washed their hands with the 58-year-old, who quickly turned his back on them when Mike came calling.
Considering Bruce is painted out to be “Mr. nice guy”, he appears to have handled the last week incredibly poorly – especially when the prize was to become Mike Ashley’s yes man at a club who’s fans aren’t remotely keen on his arrival.
