According to GhanaSoccerNet, Newcastle are in discussions over a potential move to sign central-midfielder and former target Afriyie Acquah on a free.
The Ghanaian international was heavily linked with a move to Tyneside two years ago and even admitted at one stage that a move to Newcastle was ‘90% complete‘.
He spent last season on loan at Serie A slide Empoli, however he’s been released by Torino this summer after failing to agree a new contract.
Nevertheless, here’s what he had to say about a potential move to Newcastle back in June 2017:
Acquah has recently competed alongside Christian Atsu in the 2019 African Cup of Nations and will be looking for a new club now he’s available on a free.
He’s 27 – meaning he’s slightly over Mike Ashley’s well known ’26 and under’ transfer blue print – however he may be seen as a low-cost replacement for Mo Diame.
This comes from a slightly dubious source, but this could either be one to watch and a deal that makes sense, or GhanaSoccerNet simply putting two and two together.
