The Chronicle have revealed two new names now being looked at by Newcastle United – Hull star Jarrod Bowen and Augsburg left-back Philipp Max.
The report also claims that the club want to sign FIVE players before the window closes on August 8th – and one looks all set to be Joelinton after he was spotted at St James’ Park following his medical today.
Mark Douglas’ piece states that Bundesliga full-back Max has been put to Bruce, but admits an £18m asking price may be an issue, also suggesting that Bowen has been mentioned in transfer meetings.
A move for Bowen could make a lot of sense from both Bruce’s and the clubs perspective. Not only is he young (22) and a highly-rated English player who bagged 22 Championship goals last seasosn, Steve Bruce was actually the the man who brought him to Hull.
It’s also claimed he would cost little over £10m – meaning it’s a deal that would fit into the club’s transfer policy and could well appeal to Mike Ashley. That said, this would seem a very cut-price and risky Ayoze Perez replacement.
As for Max, he is a 25-year-old attacking left-back who has been impressing in the Bundesliga, with him bagging 4 goals and 7 assists in Germany last season.
Here’s a snippet from Mark Douglas’ latest transfer piece for the Chronicle:
‘The need for quality reinforcements has been acknowledged by the board with the club looking to bring in two forwards.
‘Steve Bruce also wants a winger and a left-back, with Augsburg’s Philipp Max understood to be one name pushed to them. But whether they would meet the £18million asking price for a player in a position where they already have Paul Dummett is another matter.
‘Hull winger Jarrod Bowen – who was signed by Bruce from Hereford – is another who has been mentioned.
‘A figure in excess of £10million would be required to prise him from the Tigers, who have admitted “interest” in the midfielder this close season which hasn’t yet extended to a bid.‘
On the outgoing front, the Chronicle also claim that Man Utd will make a £30m bid for Sean Longstaff looks likely to arrive in the ‘coming days’ – something that backs up a report from the Mirror’s today suggesting a formal offer is imminent.
That said, it feels like we’ve been told for two months now that they’re about to make a bit – and we’re yet to see an ‘official’ one arrive?!
I always enjoy it when we think its a good idea to chase Championship strikers who are no more prolific than Gayle.
What on earth makes us think they will be any better?
I reckon Bruce would be better off just keeping Gayle
