Bruce speaks out about Mike Ashley meeting & Joelinton – but drops concerning transfer claim

Steve Bruce has confirmed he held ‘positive’ talks with Mike Ashley today – who met new striker Joelinton – however he’s suggested that the club are looking for just ‘one or two’ more signings this summer.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss states that Ashley wished himself and his staff the best of look and was ‘straight’ with him during an alleged ‘transfer meeting’, but insists talks between the two were positive.

Here’s what Bruce has had to say about his meeting with the Newcastle United owner earlier today:

“Mike came in to wish myself and the staff the best of luck.

“He met the new centre-forward. He took an interest in training and wished us all luck.

“I think it is always key to have a positive relationship.

“You need to get on with the people you work with.

“I am not interested in what went on before.

“So far he has been straight. I have asked a couple of questions and got straight answers.”

It’s nice of Mike to show up for once – although it says a lot that he’s arriving so soon into Bruce’s tenure yet didn’t appear to watch training once during Rafa’s time on Tyneside.

Bruce then spoke out about Joelinton’s club record arrival, saying it is a ‘statement’ from the club and the signing of a player they believe represented ‘good value’ – even at £40m:

“It is a statement from the club.

“We have done our homework. In today’s market we feel we have good value.

“You need big broad shoulders to wear the number 9 shirt.”

The need for further signings was then addressed by the 58-year-old, although it was a slight concern to here him state that we need ‘one or two more’:

“We’re aware we need to do more.

“We are doing our utmost to make sure there will be one or two more walking through the door to give us a hand.

“It’s all about improving the club.

‘We don’t just want to settle for staying in the league. My aim is to keep improving.’

“Talks have been positive. Let’s just hope this is just the start.”

I sincerely hope this was just a turn of phrase from Bruce and not him accepting that we’ll only bring in ‘one or two’ more signings over the next 15 days.

It’s been widely reported that he wants ‘at least’ another FOUR, however his latest comments make you wonder if that target has changed after a meeting with Mike Ashley?

Let’s hope not.

  1. One or two more would mean permanent singing’s, plenty free agents to bring in and and always the loan market too.

So you don’t consider free agents “permanent signings”?
