Hibernian 1-3 Newcastle: Joelinton shines in convincing comeback win

After a disappointing result at Preston on Saturday, Newcastle responded well tonight with a convincing 3-1 win at Hibernian.

(3-5-2): Darlow – Schar, Lascelles, Dummett – Manquillo, Shelvey, Hayden, S.Longstaff, Ritchie – Almiron, Joelinton.

We went behind early on via an 11th minute strike from Hibs’ Stevie Mallan and lost Matt Ritchie to an early injury, but we were soon level just five minutes later, with Joelinton pouncing to score his first goal for the club.

As you can see below, he guided a left-footed volley into the bottom corner after Javier Manquillo (who was impressive all night) whipped in an inch perfect cross for the Brazilian.

The 22-year-old was superb. Not only did he take his goal well, he showed impressive link up play, good movement, he held the ball well, looked quick, strong and had a trick or two up his sleeve too.

Sean Longstaff then put us 2-1 up before the break, with a blocked shot from Joelinton falling to the 21-year-old – whose driven shot was blasted into the bottom corner from 25 yards

Almiron went close a few times but was unable to get off the mark, however we then made it three midway through the second half, with Jamaal Lascelles heading Rolando Aarons’ dangerous cross home:

The likes of Fernandez, Clark, Sterry, Ki, Muto, Murphy and Matty Longstaff then got some minutes late on in what was a good workout and strong performance from the team.

A much improved display after a dour affair at Preston on Saturday and brilliant to see our £40m man Joelinton looking the part.

  1. I just had a quick scan on NUFC website about tickets fior the Arsenal match. In every single block there are tickeets available. Some there are 20 some 120 and some even 320 available. I reckon they’re in for a real shock next Sunday. My prediction is 38,000. That would be quite a statement.

  2. For a comparison, our attendance for the home game against Spurs last season was 51,749 – and I’m pretty sure that one was televised as well … just preempting their excuses.

I think 45k or under makes the statement – 2 or 3k has little impact imo.

  3. Good to see the Saint on Tyneside – that looks about done now ??

Could still be 4 in yet – the 2 young defenders from PSG, Swedish RB and Austin or Carroll.

  4. So it looks like Stanley is off and we are getting Jetro Williems on a loan to buy option instead.
Seemingly the youngster wanted wages way beyond what we were prepared to pay.

Williems really isn’t a bad alternative though. Loads of experience and probably more equipped to go straight into the first team if needed. He’s done a few different clubs already too, so I think he’ll settle quicker.

  5. Pity about Nsoki but if we’re having to haggle over wages then perhaps for the best. Willems looks a good experienced player so that’s another problem position sorted. Didn’t see that one coming though.
Or any of the others we’ve been linked with today. The Argie striker from Inter might be interesting.

  6. So it looks like 2 in today? Excellent… happy with both Willems and St-Maximin. I still think we need another striker. I’d be happy with Carroll on a pay as you play deal…

Dubai – the trouble with Carroll is the reason he’d be on a pay as you play is coz he’s always injured. So the deal is financial sound – but it doesn’t really guarantee cover in an area we are short.
Gayle would be ok as back up, but is also injury prone – as is Austin who is the other mentioned.

I see we’ve been linked with a young un from Inter. Don’t know how good he is, but unless we are buying him, I’d rather take a risk with one of our own – Sorensen or Toure.

I haven’t mentioned Muto either – he’s still a total enigma for me. He looked good against WHU in the friendly – but looks more a Perez than a CF.

Sharpie, yes agree fully on Carroll… I think the inter lad is for the under 23’s rather than first team, and also agree that we should give Sørensen a chance this year. Not sure on Muto, but again he needs some game time. Worth trying him, and I cannot see us buying another decent striker.

  9. Wow that Willems deal was done quick!! ?.
Excellent loan deal that one, I’ve liked what I’ve seen of him so far. Hopefully with his age and experience he will settle quickly but that’s definitely an improvement to the squad ??

  10. And maximin now confirmed as well. 2 excellent signings in today. Yeah Sharpie I’m very surprised at the speed of the Willems deal… ?

  11. Almiron , Joelinton and Maximim – some very fast counter attacks in there to keep the fans on the edge of their seats.
Should be some canny queues at the box office next week and a full house for the Arsenal game.

  12. Sidekick I can see a back 3 2 FB not WB and 2 solid midfielders backing those three up against Arsenal and the top 6. Maybe Shelvey and wing backs against weaker teams.

Dubai – aye mate, well happy with those 2 signs. I think that’s 3 really quality signings we’ve made so far.

Its as pleasing to see Schar say he’s going nowhere as well. Longstaff, Hayden and Dubravka stick around too and we have a squad that should be looking at mid table rather than relegation imo.

  14. So we have spent £56m so far and we had £60m plus £30m to spend. That’s £33m still left to spend. Reckon that will be kept to one side for relegation.

  15. And the pathetic-ness of a loan signing means only two things: At the end of this season we will either sign him permanently and not improve from this season or he will leave and we will be weaker. Loans are useless.

  16. Stu, i would normally agree re loans but in Jetros case i think it could be wise, he had a bad injury i believe and we need to see if he is back to his best so a loans a good option . We have a buy option which hopefully is a set price already agreed .

  17. So it would seem we now have 3 speed merchants up front, lets hope at least one of them has an end product too .

  18. It does make me laugh though. If Ashley had bought WH Smiths there’d be loads of posts on here ranting on.

We sign 2 quality players on the same day, and barely a post – and those posts that are made are still negative ?

    My post was not negative.
Indeed , should we not buy or sell anyone this week we will be going into the new season with a very good squad , a squad far better than most teams outside the top 8 .
I think it is only Stuart who thinks we have a **** squad woefully short in numbers and quality and certain to be relegated.
I expect he will be distraught if we even stay up and I also think he will be devastated if we get anywhere near a full house next week against Arsenal.

  20. To be fair, Sidekick I really couldn’t give two ***** if we stay up, go down or have 50,000 or 25,000 fans there next week. It doesn’t make sense to be even half bothered while Ashley owns NUFC.

But just in the intrests of fairness and reality, I have never said we have a **** squad woefully short in numbers. I have consistently say that if we don’t improve in the striker dept we will go down. I don’t believe a squad with one striker and back up of Muto and Gayle is good enough to replace the 55% of goals we have lost since last season. You may think they are but I don’t.

I also think loans are pointless. They’re usually used at this club because it means the club don’t want to spend money. I will apologise to the club if they’ve done this so it means they can spend the rest of the money on a striker. But the form says no, they wil just end up with a big fat stash in the bank with the squad being light in a key area as usual.

By the way, Sharpy. It’s not being negative when you’re questioning the reasoning behind thre signing of a player in a position that isn’t priority when a striker clearly is. It’s just pointing out an opinion.

Stu – id agree if that was the comment you made, but it wasn’t – it was £33m kept to one side for relegation and slaughtering loan deals.

  22. Sharpy – You only need to follow the form.

Loans are pointless. When was the last loan deal where we turned it into a permanant deal? Or the last loan player we got that didn’t need replacing when they’d left? So it’s either a wsste of money or a plaster.

Sidekick – I know mate. But I actually disagree and agree with Stu on what’s still needed.
I would like another CF brought in before the window closes.

Muto is an enigma, Gayle has injury issues – but I also worry from the season he had with us in the PL. He found the possession and had the chances, just wasn’t clinical enough.
Joelinton looks like he has what’s needed, but only time will tell.

I’d be happier if we had another option up front.

I also think we need to shift some, even if it’s just loans again.

Stu – that’s not the loan systems fault – that’s the doughnuts in our boardroom!!.
If we’d have signed Rondon you wouldn’t be saying that.

We loaned and signed Atsu – I wouldn’t have, but Rafa was obviously happy to take him.

It worked well with Dubravka – he was on loan first, then signed permanent.

But equally it worked the other way with the likes of Kenedy, who would have cost around £25m without that loan – what a waste that would have been.

I agree the loan thing is pointless if there isn’t an option to buy, coz then we are only improving other teams players. But if it comes with the option to buy, I think it’s no loose.

Stu – well like I say, if Rondon had stayed I don’t think you’d be saying it.
Even that he didn’t, I don’t think it was a bad return for the money we spent to loan him – £3-4m for his contribution last season.

It worked with Dubravka and Atsu and saved us from Kenedy, that Italian LB and a few others.

Bruce said after they’re not looking at signing anymore strikers and if we sign anybody else it will be a bonus. Ffs! There’s a shock!

End yet another window with a stash of cash!
