Two ‘NUFC targets’ look set to join Watford and Crystal Palace – Sky Sports

Newcastle ‘targets’ Danny Welbeck and James McCarthy look set to join new clubs before 5pm tomorrow, but they won’t be signing at St James’ Park.

As revealed by Sky Sports, Watford are now ‘in talks’ to complete the signing of Danny Welbeck on a free, while they’ve also revealed that James McCarthy is on his way to Crystal Palace after they agreed a £8m fee with Everton.

While Welbeck’s wage demands may be high (especially on a free), I can’t help but feel it would’ve been a shrewd bit of business to bring him in and sanction a move away for Dwight Gayle – who has plenty interest from promotion chasing Championship sides but won’t be allowed to leave without a replacement.

As for McCarthy, it’s been reported on several occasions this summer that Steve Bruce is an admirer of the Irish international, but his age (28), his recent injury record and the fact we’re fairly well stocked in central midfield meant that deal never seemed that likely.

Elsewhere, Sevilla midfielder Ibrahim Amadou – who we were tentatively linked with this summer and in January – has now completed a loan move to Norwich:

Krafth looks set to undergo a medical today after we finally agreed a £5m fee with Amiens, however I would not be surprised if he is the only senior player that signs between now and 5pm tomorrow.

Lille’s Thiago Maia and centre-back Steven Caulker have been linked, a new offer for PSG’s Stanley N’Soki has been touted in France and a loan move for Jordan Ibe suggested by the Northern Echo today, so who knows, we might not be finished after Krafth arrives.
