According to an ‘exclusive’ from Football Insider, Brentford look set to make a move for ex-Newcastle United flop Emmanuel Riviere.
The 29-year-old is available on a free after being released by Mainz over the summer and it’s claimed Brentford are keen to sign the striker after bagging just 2 goals in their opening 4 games of the new Championship season.
They’re yet to replace Neil Maupay – who completed a £20m move to Brighton a few weeks ago after bagging 25 goals and 8 assists for Brentford last season – but they won’t be getting a prolific striker in Riviere.
Not only did the Frenchman score just 3 goals in 31 appearances on Tyneside, he failed to score in 17 appearances on loan with Osasuna across 2016/17.
The former Monaco man – who cost us £6m back in 2014 – then completed a permanent move to Metz two years ago.
He bagged 5 goals in 28 Ligue 1 appearances in 2017/18, but managed to score just twice in 15 Ligue 2 appearances last season – something which saw him released by the French second tier side earlier this summer.
Considering Riviere has scored as many goals since 2013 (25) as Neil Maupay scored for Brentford in the league last season (25), it’s fair to say this is pretty desperate replacement for the Bees.
