NUFC linked with January move for Brentford star they ‘considered’ signing this summer

According to the Shields Gazette, Newcastle ‘considered’ a move for Brentford star Said Benrahma over the summer.

The report – which names several players the club could look at in the new year – also hints that we may go back in for the Algerian winger in January, claiming we are keen to snap up some of the best talents outside of the Premier League.

Benrahma may have been in Neil Maupay’s shadow at times last season, but the 24-year-old went on to bag an outstanding 11 goals and 17 assists for the Bees across the 2018/19 campaign.

As a result, the skilful winger was the subject of a £15m bid from Aston Villa over the summer – however it was later claimed that a deal broke down as Brentford were demanding £25m.

With this in mind, we’ll have to hope their demands have reduced significantly if we are to up our interest in the winger in January.

If we were reluctant to pay £20m for Jarrod Bowen – a fellow Championship attacker who scored 22 goals last season – I can’t see us paying top dollar for a player who’s only had one impressive year in English football.

An exciting talent who I’d love to see at St James’ Park, but someone I can’t see us going for if Brentford’s recent asking price is anything to go by.
