PLAYER RATINGS – Leicester 5-0 Newcastle: 1’s, 2’s, and 3’s for terrible Toon

Another abysmal display from Newcastle in this one, but this time we were punished by a slick Leicester side who cut through us with ease.

Here’s an assessment of each player’s performance along with my marks out of 10:

STARTING 11:

Dubravka – 3 – He got zero protection from our back four, but should’ve done much, much better with Vardy’s first goal. You can’t be beaten at your front post like that.

Krafth – 2 – Did nothing to suggest he deserves a place in starting lineup. Struggled to deal with the threat of Barnes and Chilwell and never looked like getting forward to support Almiron in attack.

Schar – 3 – Reckless and sloppy when compared to the usual high standards he’s set of late. Also missed a big chance to play in Muto during a rare attack.

Lascelles – 2 – Awful for their opening goal, allowing Ricardo far too much space to cut inside and finish. He tried to battle on, unlike some, but he was very poor.

Dummett – 3 – Tried his best but struggled against Perez and ended up putting through his own net via an unfortunate deflection. Another usually consistent player who had a stinker.

Almiron – 2 – Looked bright early on but it became more and more apparent as the game went on that he’s not suited to playing wide right. Cheap in possession, lightweight and wanted too much time on the ball.

Longstaff – 2 – Looked unfit and noticeably sluggish at times, dithering in possession and being slow to get back without the ball. A worrying display from a player who was unrecognisable to the one we saw break onto the scene in some style earlier this year.

Hayden – 1 – I won’t say he cost us the game as we never looked likely to come away with anything here, but his reckless red card tackle made it an ever bigger uphill task. A silly challenge which could’ve broken Praet’s leg – even if he did appear to get the ball initially.

Atsu – 3 – Probably caused Leicester more problems than any other NUFC player, but his direct approach and pace was the only bright spark – not his final ball.

Muto – 2 – Frustrating. Failed to sort his feet out and missed a good chance that fell to him at 0-0 and was too cheap in possession when he got it. Was hauled off early soon after Hayden’s red card.

Joelinton – 2 – You could count how many touches he had in the opposition box on one fingers, literally. He didn’t hold up the ball particularly, but he was so so isolated once again. When is Steve Bruce going to realise you can’t get much out of your £40m striker if you give him ZERO service?!

SUBS:

Ki – Didn’t exactly help shore things up in midfield. Sloppy on the ball and slow to pick up runners.

Carroll – Worked hard and put himself about at both ends, but felt like a baffling substitution from a tactical perspective. Good to see him get 30 minutes under his belt, however.

Yedlin – Came on for the final 15 minutes to help stem the tide. A thankless task.
