According to the Daily Star’s Ian Murtagh, Matt Ritchie will miss Sunday’s clash with Man Utd at St James’ Park after suffering an injury setback.
The versatile wing-back has been missing ever since he limped off with ankle ligament damage in our Carabao Cup game against Leicester in August.
He was tipped to return on Sunday just last week, however this latest update from North-East reporter Ian Murtagh states Bruce is now ‘resigned’ to being without him once again this weekend.
Not only that, Bruce is set to be without FOUR others, with Shelvey injured, Hayden suspended and both Lejeune and Gayle not yet ready to return.
Here’s a snippet from Murtagh’s latest piece for the Daily Star, which claims Ritchie suffered an ‘injury setback’ a fortnight ago:
‘Matt Ritchie is losing his race to be fit for Newcastle’s clash with Manchester United at St James’ Park on Sunday.
‘Ritchie was on the road to recovery but suffered a setback in training a fortnight ago and so this weekend’s game will come too early for him.
‘Bruce is now resigned to being without Ritchie again, leaving him with mounting problems in the middle of the park.’
With Ritchie’s expected absence in mind, it’s positive to hear no mention of Jetro Willems’ injury, which suggests the Dutchman may be ready to slot back in at left wing-back this Sunday.
Elsewhere, Saint-Maximin will be pushing for a start, while Ki Sung-yeung seems very likely to come in now Shelvey and Hayden are set for a spell on the sidelines.
