‘Exclusive’ claims NUFC are planning January move for Nottingham Forest star

According to an ‘exclusive’ from the Sun’s Mike McGrath, Steve Bruce is keen to make a January move for Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall.

The 6ft 4′ centre-back, who has represented England at U-21 level, has been in commanding form for Forest this season, helping them go into the international break as joint leaders of the Championship.

The piece claims Bruce is a ‘big admirer’ of the 22-year-old, but this move seems unlikely for a host of reasons to me.

Firstly, it’s reported that he could be available at a cut-price fee in January as his ‘contract expires next summer’, however the Nottingham Post insist that this isn’t the case, stating that he won’t come cheap as his deal doesn’t run out until 2022.

Not only that, I’m not sure why Nottingham Forest would sell a key player who looks set to be crucial to their promotion hopes, and I’m not sure why we would need another centre-back, with us already having Schar, Lascelles, Lejeune, Dummett, Clark and Fernandez on our books!

It sounds like a non starter to me, but who knows. He fits our buying policy, but I’m not sure he’s needed.

Benitez had a thing for centre-backs and maybe Bruce does too – especially when the signs are he’ll continue to play three big men at the back.

  1. Worrall signed a 4½ year extension at the end of 2017 so he is at Forest until 2022. Plus the source of this scoop was the Sun so a large pinch of salt is in order.
He’s a good player but far from the finished article, not sure Newcastle need a defender that is still learning his trade.
