According to the Sun’s Alan Nixon, Newcastle are one of FOUR Premier League clubs interested in Preston star Ben Davies.
The ball-playing defender – who can play at centre-back or left-back – was linked with a move to St James’ Park back in July, with Nixon claiming Bruce was a ‘huge admirer’ of the 24-year-old.
Since then, his stock has only risen, with him helping an in-form Preston side move up to 3rd in the Championship over the weekend, and it sounds like we’re no longer the only Premier League side tracking him as a result.
Nixon’s latest piece for the Sun claims Brighton are lining up a January bid for the £10m-rated centre-back, while Everton and Wolves are also credited with interest.
He looks a talent, however I’d question just why we’d be looking at signing ANOTHER centre-back in January, with Lascelles, Schar, Lejeune, Dummet, Fernandez and Clark already on our books.
I highly doubt Bruce will be handed a great deal of cash to spend in January, so I’m not sure it would make much sense to spend a considerable wedge of his budget on an area we don’t need to strengthen – even if Davies is a talented player who’s been tipped to make the step up.
