I’m fully behind Miguel Almiron and would love nothing more than to see him turn things around at St James’ Park – but his diving has to stop.
The 25-year-old was sent off for Paraguay last night (a game which saw Aleksandar Mitrovic bag a 90th minute winner!), earning a second yellow for simulation just 54 minutes into their clash with Serbia – and this isn’t the first time he’s been guilty of diving.
He isn’t the biggest player in the world so may have found Serbia’s notoriously physical approach difficult, however a theme is emerging here and it’s indefensible.
The Paraguayan has been booked for simulation twice already for Newcastle this season, and both were pretty blatant against Arsenal and Man Utd.
It won’t take long for referees to cotton on and it will end up working against him, with a bad reputation likely to attach itself to him if he’s not careful.
The former Atlanta United star seems like a nice lad, who’s said to be shy behind the scenes and always full of smiles, however this can’t continue.
Newcastle fans will be patient with his final ball and search for goals – you can see he’s got talent but is lacking confidence – but no one can defend cheating.
For his and our sake, let’s hope he cuts it out soon
